Men's Basketball Falls to Phoenix in Exhibition Opener

Box Score ELON, N.C. -- The William Peace University men's basketball team started off their season against Elon University in an exhibition game on Saturday night. The November 11th match-up in Elon, NC resulted in a 96-53 loss for the Pacers.

Elon grabbed the first points of the game, though Paul Dunlap would sink a 3-pointer to tie it up 3-3. The Phoenix quickly took back a 6-3 lead and the Pacers never managed to tie it up again. Fouls seemed to be a problem for WPU, as Elon would go 8 for 10 on their free throws in the first half, with WPU having no foul shot opportunities. Elon took a 19-point lead near the end of the first half as the game went into halftime 44-25.

In the second half, Elon began to control the game, increasing their lead to 55-28. The Pacers would then go on an 11-point run, starting with a layup from Sam Arnold and ending on a 3-pointer from John Burwell to put WPU within 16 points (55-39). However, Elon would hit a 14-point streak of their own and increase their lead to 72-41. The Pacers were not able to recover, eventually giving Elon the 96-53 win. Elon continued to take advantage of their foul shouts, going 15 for 20 on the game.

Camden Ferguson led the Pacers with 9 points all coming from behind the arch, while Sam Arnold and Mikal Gaylord tallied six points a piece. Arnold also led the team with 6 rebounds. WPU had a total of 22 personal fouls, with both Trey Bryant and Paul Dunlap fouling out in the second half.

The Pacers now look ahead to November 15th, when they will travel to Newport News, VA to take on Virginia Wesleyan College in their first regular season game. The 7:30 p.m. game will be the first of the season for the Marlins, who lost in the semifinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament last year.
