BEREA, KY -- The WPU men's soccer team earned a well fought victory against the Mountaineers of Berea College on Thursday evening with a final score of 3-2. The Pacers now stand (6-5-1) overall and (2-3-1) in conference.
The Pacers made an impressive comeback with the game's intensity peaking in the final minutes of play. The first period began with the Pacers taking 8 shots in comparison to the Mountaineers 5 shots. Berea would score their first shot of the game at the nine minute mark.
The Mountaineers would score their second goal just 10 minutes into the second period, putting the Pacers down 2-0. The game proved to be very physical with Peace notching 12 fouls and Berea with 14. The Pacers turned up the heat in the second period, taking 14 shots. Senior,
Chris Deleon brought in the first goal for the Pacers off of a penalty kick in the 69th minute. After several back-to-back shots fired at the Berea goalie, a header by
Isaac Kruger, assisted by
Chris Deleon, would find it's way into the back of the net with just 12 minutes remaining in regulation. With the game tied,
Chris Deleon would find
Junior Ayala to put him in scoring position. The sophomore would sink the game winner just two minutes following the last Pacer goal. Berea made attempts to salvage the game but their physicality and play on the field earned them two yellow cards in the final three minutes of the game. The Pacers stole the victory 3-2.
The Pacers break for one day before continuing their play Saturday, October 7, at 2:00 p.m. when they take on conference opponent, Piedmont College, at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Lions are (6-3) overall and (3-2) in conference play. Piedmont is coming off of a loss to Emory University.
