CARY, N.C. - The William Peace University men's soccer team opened USA South play with a 3-2 win over Pfeiffer University Wednesday night at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Pacers improve to 6-4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Roberto Rayo got the Pacers on the board in the 14th minute, scoring off an assist from Gabriel Faria Jr. Pfeiffer answered just over two minutes later on a goal from Erick Campos-Marquez to tie the match at 1-1.
Peace regained the lead in the 23rd minute after Eder Acevedo Delgado took advantage of a Pfeiffer miscue in the back, pressuring the goalkeeper and winning the ball before putting it away into an open net for a 2-1 lead.
Rayo struck again in the 58th minute, this time off an assist from Tambe Mboumien, to give Peace a 3-1 advantage. Rayo finished the night with two goals on five shots, putting four on frame.
Pfeiffer cut the lead to one in the 80th minute when Wesley Hooker scored off an assist from Celeb Yopp, but the Pacers kept the Falcons off the board over the final 10 minutes to secure their first USA South win of the season.
Dallas Story made six saves in goal for Peace, including four in the opening half. The Pacers put eight of their 11 shots on goal in the win.
William Peace heads back on the road Saturday, Oct. 3, to continue USA South play against Brevard College. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Family Field in Brevard, N.C.
