CARY, N.C. - The William Peace University men's soccer team picked up its second straight win Sunday evening, defeating Shaw University 1-0 at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Pacers improve to 4-3-1 on the season with one week remaining before USA South conference play begins.
Peace wasted little time getting on the board. Topher Johnson found the back of the net in the fourth minute off an assist from Eder Acevedo Delgado to give the Pacers an early 1-0 lead.
Shaw looked to answer in the opening half, but goalkeeper Dallas Story made two saves to keep the Bears off the board. Peace carried its lead into halftime.
The Pacers continued to create opportunities after the break, recording seven shots and seven corner kicks in the second half. Gavin Beaupre put an attempt on goal in the 76th minute, but Shaw goalkeeper Christoforos Theokli made the save.
Story came up with another save in the 88th minute to preserve the lead and secure the shutout. He finished with four saves in 90 minutes of play.
Peace held an 11-6 advantage in shots and a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Johnson's goal marked his fifth of the season.
The Pacers continue their home stand Tuesday, Sept. 22, hosting Randolph-Macon College at 6 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park. Peace will then face Regent University on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m. in its final match before opening USA South play against Pfeiffer on Sept. 30.
