Pacers Throttle Pfeiffer 77-61 For Third Straight Victory

RALEIGH, N.C. – William Peace took charge in the second half to come away with a 77-61 men's basketball win over Pfeiffer at the Hermann Athletic Center on Tuesday night.

Timothy Pettiford led the Pacers with 22 points while Michael Dulin and Beau Bryant added 14 and 13 points, respectively. But it was the defense that led the Pacers (6-5 USA South, 11-11 overall) to their third consecutive win, all against USA South opponents.

Pfeiffer, the second-highest scoring team in the conference, was held to 14 points below their average. The Pacers limited their foe to 37 percent shooting and forced 14 turnovers, which led to a 23-3 advantage in turnover points. That turned out to be the difference for the Pacers, who moved up to fourth place in the league standings with three regular season games left. The top six teams in the eight-team conference advance to the upcoming USA South Tournament.

"There was a great commitment to our game plan tonight by our guys," Pacers Head Coach Claude Shields said. "We wanted to slow the pace down and make it more of a half-court game. I thought we were very disciplined and executed our stuff well, especially in the second half. I am proud of this group for continuing to get better every day!"

William Peace, ranked third in the league in fewest points allowed, made life difficult in the paint for the taller Falcons, who never appeared in rhythm offensively despite shooting 43 percent in the second half. The Falcons (5-5 USA South, 8-10 overall) had to work for many shots and struggled through stretches to put the ball in the bucket.

Meanwhile, the Pacers lit the nets on 55 percent shooting in the second half, including 46 percent behind the three-point arc, to extend their 28-26 halftime lead. Pettiford continued his streak of 20 or more points in five consecutive games as the Falcons had no answer for him.

His double-clutch three pointer with the shot clock running down put the finishing touches on Falcons. It stretched the Pacers' lead to 73-57 with under three minutes left.

Pettiford, who collected seven rebounds, paced a balanced attack for the Pacers. Malachi Borders scored nine points, Ryan Lominack chipped in seven points and Shawn Jones added six points.

Dulin and Lominack once again sparked a bench that outscored Pfeiffer's bench 25-21. Despite the Falcons' length, the Pacers were the stronger and more grittier team inside, outscoring their opponent 34-26 in bench points.

The Pacers set the tone early by opening a 10-point lead three times in the first half. The lead dwindled right before halftime, however.

The Pacers pushed the margin back to double figures (55-41) on Dulin's three-pointer in the second half. This time, they withstood a Pfeiffer rally to maintain their hold on the contest.

Daymond Beckwith scored 12 points for Pfeiffer. Ty Black added 11 points.

The Pacers will conclude their home schedule this weekend with consecutive games on Friday, Feb. 9, and Saturday, Feb. 10. Conference leader Mary Baldwin comes to the Hermann Athletic Center on Friday for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

On Saturday, Southern Virginia will be the opponent on Senior Day. Game time is 4 p.m.
