Pacers Fall To Mary Baldwin At Home

RALEIGH, N.C. – Timothy Pettiford scored 18 points and Beau Bryant added 15 points for William Peace in a 66-54 USA South men's basketball loss to conference leader Mary Baldwin at the Hermann Athletic Center on Friday night.

The loss snapped the Pacers' three-game winning streak. Despite the defeat, the Pacers secured a spot in the USA South Tournament, which begins Feb. 12. They are currently fifth in the league standings and can drop no lower than sixth. The top six teams in the eight-team conference will advance to the tournament.

Shawn Jones nearly posted a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Malachi Borders also added nine points for the Pacers, who built a 26-18 halftime lead.

Pettiford's three-pointer gave the Pacers an 11-8 lead, and they stayed in front the rest of the half. An 11-4 spurt, capped by Pettiford's jumper right before the buzzer, pushed the margin to eight points.

The Pacers' lead slipped away after halftime. The score was tied three times before Mary Baldwin made its game-deciding run midway in the second half. The Pacers were outscored 25-11 to trail by 14 with under a minute remaining.

The Pacers shot 29 percent for the contest and the Squirrels shot 40 percent in the defensive battle. Mary Baldwin (9-2 USA South, 13-9 overall) outscored the hosts 48-28 on 56 percent shooting in the second half.

On Saturday, six seniors will be honored as the Pacers host Southern Virginia in the season's final home game. Tip-off is 4 p.m.

This will be the final home contest for Tyler Parton, Donolique Tyrell, Tim Aydlett, Malachi Borders, Timothy Pettiford and Beau Bryant.
