Hot-Shooting Pacers Down JWU Charlotte In Men's Basketball

RALEIGH, N.C. – The William Peace men's basketball team discovered its shooting eye, and it led to the season's first victory.

Elijah Green scored 22 points and Michael Dulin added 16 points and five assists as the Pacers shot 51.6 percent in an 85-74 non-conference win over JWU Charlotte at the Hermann Athletic Center on Wednesday.

"Pleased with the outcome tonight - but more impressed with our process over the course of the game," WPU Head Coach Claude Shields said. "We have struggled to hit shots this year - but our guys have remained committed to getting better each day both in and out of practice. Their hard work paid off tonight and it was nice to see the ball go in - we still have work to do defensively, which is what we will be focusing on before playing Hampden Sydney!"

Parker Hodgson contributed 11 points for the Pacers (1-5 overall), who did much of their damage from the perimeter. William Peace connected on 12 of 29 three-pointers compared to 2 of 7 for the Wildcats.

Green was especially cooking behind the three-point line, making 5 of 6 treys. The freshman guard was 9 of 12 overall and Dulin finished 7 of 11, including two three-pointers.

The 85 points easily surpassed the 55.4 points the Pacers averaged entering the contest. William Peace was sizzling from the outset, making eight of their first 10 shots to build a 21-6 lead. Green set the tone with 11 points during that early stretch.

Their shooting prowess helped the Pacers fend off the Wildcats on more than one occasion. JWU Charlotte (1-7 overall) shot 53.5 percent in the first half but cooled off considerably in the second half, making 42.8 percent of their shots.

Still, the Wildcats trailed by five (73-68) with under four minutes remaining but the Pacers stayed hot on the offensive end to keep their distance down the stretch. Hodgson's three-pointer, his third, sparked a 12-6 run to finish off JWU Charlotte. Green's deep three-pointer with seconds winding down capped the run before a Wildcat layup closed out the scoring.

Chuks Ezeonu chipped in eight points and nine rebounds and Tyler Whitehurst and Shawn Jones each scored seven for the Pacers, who shot 53.3 percent in the second half. Jaylen Benson-Hollinhead paced the Wildcats with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

The Pacers will take a long break before visiting nationally-ranked Hampden-Sydney in Virginia on Dec. 13. Tipoff is 4 p.m.
