Dulin Scores School Record 40 Points In Men's Basketball Win Over Regent

RALEIGH, N.C. – Coming off a stretch of tough losses to nationally-ranked teams, the William Peace men's basketball team needed a positive shot in the arm.

That got the dose they needed on Sunday.

Michael Dulin poured in a school-record 40 points, including 28 in the second half, as the Pacers pull away from Regent 95-76 at the Hermann Athletic Center on Sunday.

The victory has the Pacers (2-6 overall) feeling good heading into the holiday break. It also eases the sting of Friday's 97-59 loss to No. 9 Hampden-Sydney, last season's NCAA DIII national runner-up. The Pacers also lost in November to nationally-ranked Guilford, which reached the DIII semifinals last season.

Between the losses, William Peace sandwiched a victory at home over JWU Charlotte two weeks ago but Sunday's win stood out because of the offensive fireworks led by Dulin.

The senior guard was simply cooking from the perimeter, especially in the second half. He keyed an 18-6 run with four treys in the first four minutes to break open a four-point halftime lead. The surge stretched the margin to 56-40.

Dulin wasn't through, however. He swished two more treys and Tyler Whitehurst added a three-pointer to stretch the lead even further to 21 points at 67-46. The Pacers led by as many as 23 points in the second half.

When Dulin checked out for good with less than two minutes remaining, he had canned 8 of 9 from beyond the three-point arc, including his first seven in the second half. Overall, the Pacers guard finished 15 of 22 from the floor including 10 of 16 from three-point land. The 10 treys are one off the school record of 11 held by Camden Ferguson against Brevard in 2018.

Dulin did break the school single-game scoring mark of 36 points once held by Tyson Sellers against Pfeiffer in 2019.

The Charlotte, N.C., native was the biggest star on a night full of offensive stalwarts for the Pacers, who shot 50.8 from the floor including 62.1 percent in the decisive second half when they turned a close game into a rout. William Peace outscored Regent 57-42 in the second half with the 57 points being the most in a half for the Pacers this season.

The 95 points are also a season high as Dulin led four double-figure scorers. Elijah Green added 14 points to go with seven assists and Chuks Ezeonu nearly had a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Shawn Jones pumped in 11 points and seven rebounds for the Pacers, who shot 10 of 20 behind the three-point line for 50 percent in the second half.

Ezeonu and Jones each collected two blocks for the Pacers, who outrebounded Regent 47-27 which led to a 17-8 edge in second chance points.

Though they trailed only once, 3-2, in the opening minutes, the Pacers never led by more eight points. The Royals (1-9 overall) tied the score twice and whittled their deficit to 35-34 but Green's free throw and Jones' jumper gave the Pacers a 38-34 halftime advantage.

Dulin scored 12 first-half points but was sizzling in the second half which proved to be too much for the Royals.

William Peace will enjoy the Christmas break before heading to the Guilford College Holiday Classic in Greensboro, N.C., on Dec. 29-30. The Pacers play Belhaven (Miss.) on Sunday and Sewanee on Monday.
