Henderson Scores 35 In Women's Basketball Loss To Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – Zikira Henderson poured in 35 points but William Peace dropped its USA South women's basketball opener to Brevard 71-58 at Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Pacers fell to 0-1 in the USA South and 1-4 overall. The Tornados upped their record to 1-0 in the conference and 3-1 overall.

Henderson, a freshman guard from Greer, S.C., connected on 10 of 19 shots from the floor and 13 of 14 from the free throw line. Her single-game point total is the ninth highest in school history on the NCAA Division III level.

"Zikira had a career day today," WPU Head Coach Annalee Bollinger said. "She really took that game over for us. I knew from the moment we recruited her that she had the potential to do some really special things and that was on full display today. She has played five games into her freshman year and it finally clicked for her today. It's going to be fun watching her this season."

Bollinger, a first-year head coach, returned to her alma mater where she was a sharpshooting guard from 2016 to 2019. She finished her career as a 1,000-point scorer and still holds the school career record for most three pointers during the Tornados' era in the NCAA.

The outcome was not what she wanted but Bollinger was pleased with the effort coming off a 71-34 loss to JWU Charlotte on Wednesday.

"It's always hard to win on the road especially against an experienced team," said Bollinger, who was an associate head coach at Brevard before landing at William Peace. "However, I thought we competed for 40 minutes today. I was proud of our group for our fight and fixing some of the issues that we had in our last game. Every game we play we will get better and I'm excited to see us continue to grow."

Henderson scored 10 of the Pacers' 14 points in the first period as they trailed by six. The Tornados seized control of the game in the second period, outscoring the Pacers 17-8 for a 37-22 halftime lead.

The Pacers outscored the Tornados 36-34 in the final two periods but could not cut the margin to single digits.

Ja'Naisja Baker added seven points for the Pacers. Brittany Blackburn posted six points and seven rebounds, tying Shania Taylor for team rebounding honors. Alayna Randolph contributed four points, three steals and six rebounds.

The Pacers will take a break for Thanksgiving before returning to action Monday, Dec. 2, at Virginia Wesleyan. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
