Henderson Pours In 22 Points In Women's Basketball Loss

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Zikira Henderson scored a game-high 22 points for William Peace in a 73-41 women's basketball loss to Virginia Wesleyan at TowneBank Arena on Monday.

Henderson, who scored a season-high 35 points in a loss to Brevard two weeks ago, has averaged 28.5 points in her last two games. On Monday, she was 7 of 14 from the floor including 3 of 5 from three-point range. Henderson, a freshman guard, knocked down 5 of 7 free throws.

"Zikira has been excellent for us the last two games," WPU Head Coach Annalee Bollinger said. "She is starting to find her groove and it's exciting to watch. She's putting the work in and it's starting to pay off some. It's a long season but I have no doubt she will continue to work hard and reap the benefits of it."

Alayna Randolph added seven points, four steals, two blocks and three rebounds for the Pacers, who fell to 1-5 overall. Brene'a Daye chipped in six points and Hannah Lewis grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Henderson scored five of the Pacers' first seven points for a 7-0 lead. The margin vanished as the Marlins used a 19-2 spurt for a 19-9 first-period lead.

Virginia Wesleyan (4-3 overall) never trailed from that point. The Marlins' lead stretched to 33-18 at the half and 56-27 after the third period.

The Marlins capitalized on mistakes and rebounding to pull away from the Pacers, who committed 27 turnovers and were outrebounded 52-33. The hosts held the advantage in turnover points (28-7), points in the paint (44-14), second-chance points (23-10) and bench points (31-4).

William Peace is back on the court Wednesday, Dec. 4, at home against Greensboro in a USA South battle. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Hermann Athletic Center.
