Second-Half Run Hurts Scrappy Pacers In Men's Basketball Loss To Averett

RALEIGH, N.C. – William Peace showed heart as the Pacers battled a tough Averett team in men's basketball action Wednesday night.

But a big second-half run by the Cougars decided the outcome as the Pacers fell 60-48 at the Hermann Athletic Center. William Peace remained winless at 0-3 but not without a fight against a squad that knocked off a nationally ranked team this season.

Averett (3-0 overall) averaged 82 points entering Wednesday's non-conference affair but was held well below its average by a tenacious Pacers' defense. However, the Cougars found enough offense in the second half to turn the tide.

William Peace trailed 29-22 at halftime, but opened the second half on fire. An 8-2 run, capped by Parker Hodgson's three-pointer, closed the deficit to 31-30 to the delight of the home crowd.

The Cougars responded with a run of their own – 24-5 – which pushed their lead to 55-35. Despite the deficit, the Pacers didn't back down. William Peace finished on a 13-5 run for the final score.

"I am proud of our effort – and commitment to our defensive game plan tonight," WPU Head Coach Claude Shields said. "We executed for about 35 minutes - and couldn't recover from Averett's big run in the second half. A big focus for us is taking care of the basketball and eliminating our unforced turnovers. I am excited to watch the film and continue to get better!!"

No Pacer scored in double figures but five players scored between nine and six points. Tyler Whitehurst came off the bench to score nine points and Hodgson added eight points of 2 of 4 three-point shooting.

Shawn Jones totaled seven points, seven rebounds and two steals and Michael Dulin had seven points and five rebounds. Ryan Lominack finished with six points and Elijah Green totaled four assists for the Pacers, who held Averett to 35.9 percent but shot 33.3 percent and committed 20 turnovers to Averett's 14.

The Pacers are back in action Saturday, Nov. 23, against Randolph in Lynchburg, Va. Tipoff is 4 p.m.
