Men's Basketball Falls In Season Opener

SALEM, Va. – William Peace began the 2024-25 men's basketball season on Friday with a mixture of veterans and fresh faces.

They got their first taste of action together in the Frankie Allen Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by Roanoke. The result was a 74-68 loss to Saint Vincent (Pa.) at the Cregger Center. The Pacers showed potential in the contest, though.

"We are playing so many new guys - it's exciting to watch them learn and grow in real time," WPU Head Coach Claude Shields said. "We can't wait to turn the page and get another shot tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Springfield!"

William Peace will take on Springfield in the consolation game. Saint Vincent (Pa.) and Roanoke will play in the championship game at 3 p.m.

Nine returnees and 10 newcomers are on the Pacers' roster this season. Guards Michael Dulin and Ryan Lominack and forward Shawn Jones saw significant action last season. Many Pacers played important minutes for the first time on Friday.

The Pacers showed flashes of what they can become. They rallied from a 10-point deficit in a three-minute span to go ahead 32-31 late in the first half. William Peace trailed 33-32 at halftime.

In the second half, the Pacers nearly erased an 18-point deficit in the final 10 minutes. They trailed 72-58 with under three minutes left. A 10-2 run, including five points by Dulin, closed the gap to the final score of 74-68.

"We played with a ton of fight - but dug ourselves too big of a hole in each half," Shields said. "They turned up the pressure in the second half with their full court run and jump and we had way too many live ball turnovers."

Jones scored 13 points and added seven rebounds and three blocks. Elijah Green matched Jones with 13 points and dished out six assists to two turnovers.

Dulin scored nine points and Ababacar Thiam chipped in eight points and eight rebounds. Lominack scored eight points and Sully Caruso grabbed seven rebounds.

The Pacers outshot Saint Vincent 44.4 percent to 43.1 percent but committed 22 turnovers to the Bearcats 14. Saint Vincent outscored William Peace in the paint 44-26.

The growing process continues for William Peace on Saturday. The plan is to gel as a unit by conference time.
