Late Game Heroics Lift Pacers Past Greensboro 59-55

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Head Coach Lori Drake of William Peace knew that Greensboro would be a tough opponent despite its record.

She was right.

The lead went back-and-forth throughout the women's basketball game between the USA South squads. But William Peace stepped up when it counted in a 59-55 road conference win at Hanes Gymnasium on Saturday.

The victory lifted the Pacers' record to 3-5 in the USA South and 5-9 overall. Greensboro dropped to 1-5 in the conference and 1-12 overall.

Hannah Lewis and Tanaesha Ellison led the way for the Pacers. Lewis scored a season-high 27 points on 10 of 19 shooting including 5 of 10 three-pointers. The five treys were also a season high for her.

Ellison played her usual all-around game, finishing with 24 points on 9 of 18 shooting. She added 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals.

""We know that playing road games in the USA South Conference is tough, and we stepped up to come out on top," Drake said. "Hannah Lewis was big time for us today, shooting 50 percent from three. With that being said, this win was a full team effort, and I am proud of them."

The duo of Lewis and Ellison combined to score 51 of the Pacers' 59 points, but their teammates contributed in other ways. Nautica Smiley had five assists and two steals while Ja'Naisja Baker and Zia Prim combined for five steals. As a team, the Pacers forced 25 turnovers to offset their 28 miscues.

Lewis and Ellison made key plays late to lift the Pacers to victory in a contest featuring seven ties and 13 lead changes. Lewis drilled two free throws to give the Pacers a 56-55 lead around the 2:30 mark. After a Greensboro miss, Ellison converted a three-point play with under two minutes left for the final score.

Kensie Harris totaled 13 points and nine rebounds to lead the Pride. Nataya Atwater and Azuria Barrino each scored 10 points.

The Pacers return to the court on Sunday, Jan. 14, against their archrival Meredith in Raleigh, N.C. Tipoff is 2 p.m. on Meredith's campus.
