Comeback Bid Falls Short In Pacers' Loss To Meredith

RALEIGH, N.C. – A valiant comeback by William Peace fell short in a 77-68 USA South women's basketball loss to crosstown rival Meredith at Weatherspoon Gymnasium on Sunday.

Tanaesha Ellison played another outstanding game for the Pacers (3-6 USA South, 5-10 overall), finishing with 33 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, seven steals and two blocks. Nautica Smiley added 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Ellison engineered a second-half rally that erased the Pacers' 39-32 halftime deficit. She scored nine points during a 17-8 run, capped by Smiley's jumper, which gave the Pacers their first lead at 49-47. Smiley's three-pointer put the Pacers ahead 58-55 in the fourth period but Meredith went on a 22-10 surge in the final seven minutes to claim the win.

Ellison was 12 of 17 from the floor for the Pacers, who scored 24 points off 21 Meredith turnovers. Hannah Lewis collected nine points.

Rylie Wade finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds for Meredith (3-6 USA South, 5-10 overall), who outrebounded the Pacers 45-26 and scored 22 second-chance points. Piper Carriere added 12 points.

After back-to-back road games, the Pacers will host Pfeiffer at the Hermann Athletic Center on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. William Peace and Meredith will meet again Feb. 6 in the Play 4 Kay Game at the Hermann Athletic Center, starting at 5:30 p.m.
