Baseball Set For USA South Conference Championship At N.C. Wesleyan

RALEIGH, NC -- William Peace University baseball is set to compete in the USA South Conference Championship for the first time in program history. The Pacers will take on top-seeded N.C. Wesleyan on May 12th and 13th in a best-of-three series, with game one set for May 12th at 6PM.

The Pacers mounted a comeback victory over Brevard College on May 7th with a walkoff single from Patrick Rogan giving them a 15-14 win and sending them to the championship. The program set a new record this season for wins in a single season, totaling 25, with Rogan notching a new single-season RBI record with 55. Rogan is averaging .345 at bat with a .622 slugging percentage.

Brett Kemp has currently totaled 46 RBIs for the Pacers, sitting at a .414 batting average and .637 slugging percentage and 7 homeruns on the season. Kemp and Rogan were both dynamic during the regular season series against NCWU, in which the Pacers went 2-1 over the Battling Bishops, with both collecting two homeruns in the series.

Pitcher Jack McIntosh was also a key component of the regular season series, coming in to pitch 2 innings in relief in the close 13-12 win before pitching a complete game, allowing just 4 hits and 2 runs with 8 strikeouts in a 3-2 win. Philip Berger has also led the Pacers all year on the mound as he is 3rd overall in the league with 73 strikeouts, now having collected 219 strikeouts in his career to top the record book for career strikeouts.

Historically, the Pacers are 7-22 against NCWU, a program which has won eight USA South titles and made a total of 22 NCAA Tournament appearances, winning twice in '81 and '99, with the '99 win coming under current WPU Head Coach Charlie Long. The Battling Bishops defeated Pfeiffer twice and Greensboro once in the first round of the tournament to advance to the finals. Jackson Hobbs currently leads the program and the USA South at bat, notching 59 RBIs and 10 homeruns, while on the mound Payne Stolsworth leads the Battling Bishops and the USA South with 10 wins and 90 strikeouts.

Game one is set to begin at NCWU at 6PM on May 12th.
