Pacers Display Grit In Close Win

RALEIGH, N.C. – Tanaesha Ellison's free throw with two seconds left sealed a 75-71 William Peace victory over Bob Jones University in women's basketball action at the Hermann Athletic Center on Friday.

The contest was the second in two days for the Pacers, who were coming off a tough double-digit loss to Guilford at home. On Friday, the Pacers (3-4 overall) prevailed in a back-and-forth battle that featured 30 lead changes.

"We showed grit and fight which led to the win," first-year Head Coach Lori Drake said. "We hit some key threes and free throws toward the end of the game. Playing as one unit is what we push our girls to do, and that's what we did tonight."

Ellison, who played nine minutes against Guilford due to foul trouble, scored the final four points for the Pacers, including a driving layup through the Bruins' defense for a 74-71 lead with under a minute remaining.

Ellison put up monster numbers off the bench against Bob Jones. She finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks.

Nautica Smiley's numbers were similar to Ellison's. She amassed 18 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and four steals in 40 minutes. She also played 40 minutes against Guilford.

LeBron James would be proud of their stat lines.

Allye Woodruff was also key in the win. She nailed back-to-back three pointers in the fourth period to break a tie game late and put the Pacers up for good. The Pacers outscored the Bruins 10-6 in the last four minutes after the game was tied at 65.

Hannah Lewis contributed 10 points and five rebounds, Brene'a Daye had eight points and Ja'Naisja Baker collected six points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Drake, the Pacers Head Coach, said one stat in the boxscore reflected the Pacers' will against a taller team.

"I thought our girls came out and fought," Drake said. "We set some goals before the game to outrebound them. That has been one of our biggest goals all year to outrebound teams and we've struggled in that department. Tonight, we outrebounded them (47-39) which was a big win for us."

Ainsley Hutton scored 15 points for Bob Jones (0-6 overall). Shea Dickinson added 12 points.

Drake was proud of how her team bounced back after the Guilford loss. She believes both games will prepare them for USA South Atlantic Conference action which resumes next Saturday, Dec. 9, against Brevard at home. Game time is 2 p.m.
