Volleyball Tops Guilford In Five, Finishes 2-2 In Raleigh Invitational

CARY, N.C. – William Peace finished the Raleigh Invitational 2-2 after beating Guilford in five sets and falling to Randolph Macon in four sets Saturday at the Hermann Athletic Center.

Head Coach Hannah Marshall believes the invitational, which the Pacers co-hosted with Meredith, provided quality competition for the Pacers as they prepare for the USA South Conference schedule. The event featured 14 matches in two days including seven matches at William Peace. Six teams played at the Hermann Athletic Center.

"I was really impressed by our growth as a team this weekend," Marshall said. "We battled hard and I am really looking forward to getting back into the gym next week to get to work!"

The Pacers (4-4 overall) pulled out a thrilling win (23-25, 25-20, 25-27, 25-19, 15-12) over Guilford in the morning. Down 2-1, the Pacers won the last two sets to emerge victorious. William Peace is 3-0 in five-set matches this season.

Chassie Jacops led three Pacers In double-digit kills with 13. Sarah Yates and Jordyn Chinigo added 11 and 10, respectively, while Jordan Juanes and Georgia Grace Anderson each had nine kills. Maegan Brylski tallied 47 assists along with six service aces, 15 digs, five blocks and five kills.

Katie Arens totaled 20 digs while Vivian Camplin and Savannah Hairr accumulated 18 and 17 digs, respectively. Juanes had 12 digs and Jacobs, Chinigo and Anderson each collected five blocks.

The Pacers took care of business after a close 27-25 loss in the third set. In the fifth and deciding set, William Peace scored three straight points for a 14-10 lead. The Quakers closed within two but Chinigo finished them off with a kill off Brylski's assist.

Later in the day, William Peace held its own against Randolph Macon, considered among the preseason favorites in the tough Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). The Pacers scored six consecutive points to erase a three-point deficit and win the first set 25-22.

The Pacers barely lost the second set as Randolph-Macon pulled even at 1-1. Randolph-Macon took control from that point as it easily won the last two sets.

Anderson recorded 12 kills to lead the Pacers offensively. Juanes had 11 kills and 18 digs and Jacops finished with 10 kills. Brylski handed out 33 assists, Vivian Camplin totaled 12 digs and Arens had 10 digs.

Chingo and Anderson each totaled three blocks.

The Pacers continue their challenging non-conference schedule this upcoming weekend. They will play three matches in the Hill City Classic in Lynchburg, Va., on Sept. 13-14. Their opponents are Lynchburg, LaGrange and Randolph.
