Volleyball Sweeps Warren Wilson, Finishes Day 1-1 In Raleigh Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. – The first day of the Raleigh Invitational was another day of growing for the William Peace volleyball team.

The Pacers took their licks in the first match, losing 3-0 (14-25, 23-25, 15-25) to Bridgewater on Friday afternoon, but bounced back to topple Warren Wilson 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-14) in the nightcap at the Hermann Athletic Center. Bridgewater defeated Warren Wilson in three sets (25-15, 25-14, 29-27) in the second match.

The Pacers are 3-3 overall and steadily improving.

"We have been learning a lot about ourselves these first few weekends, and we look forward to growing together going into Day 2 of the Raleigh Invitational!" WPU Head Coach Hannah Marshall said.

They already knew that 1,000-assist setter Maegan Brylski is a spectacular volleyball player. In addition to a team-high 30 assists, the junior setter led or co-led the Pacers in digs (12), blocks (2) and aces (5) against Warren Wilson. Her six kills were one off the team high.

Her setting skills contributed to a balanced offense. Four players recorded seven kills - Jordan Juanes, Georgia Grace Anderson, Jordyn Chinigo and Chassie Jacops.

Olivia Eldridge tied Brylski for team-high honors in digs and Juanes added 10 digs and two aces. Vivian Camplin also totaled two aces for the Pacers, who posted 11 aces and a .257 hitting percentage.

After a close first set, the Pacers cruised to victory in the last two sets for the sweep. They went on 8-0 and 7-0 runs for a 22-8 lead in the third set.

William Peace showed resilience after losing at home in the opener. They started slowly in the first set but played much better in the second set. The Pacers held an 18-12 lead before the Eagles rallied.

The Pacers were still ahead 23-21 but the Eagles scored the last four points for the 25-23 win. The second-set loss appeared to take the steam out of the Pacers in the third set.

Juanes tallied 10 kills and 15 digs against Bridgewater while Jacops added nine kills and Chinigo chipped in seven kills. Brylski dished out 24 assists and Camplin finished with nine digs and two aces. Tameka Adams and Chinigo each had two blocks.

The Raleigh Invitational concludes Saturday with four matches at the Hermann Athletic Center. Catholic faces Guilford in the 9 a.m. opener before William Peace takes on Guilford at 11 a.m. Catholic and Randolph-Macon battle at 1 p.m. followed by William Peace and Randolph-Macon in the last match at 3 p.m.
