Volleyball Falls In Five Sets To Meredith

RALEIGH, N.C. – The action in Wednesday's volleyball match between William Peace and Meredith was befitting of a crosstown rivalry.

Both teams played with fierce intensity inside a packed and loud Hermann Athletic Center. It took five sets to determine a winner.

In the end, the Pacers fell 25-22, 22-25, 9-25, 25-14, 12-15 to the Avenging Angels. The loss snapped a six-match win streak and gave the Pacers (10-5 overall, 3-1 USA South) their first conference defeat. It was also Meredith's first win on WPU's campus in the last three tries.

Both teams will meet again Oct. 9 at Meredith in a 7 p.m. match.

"Today was a game of resilience, and while we definitely hung in there to force the fifth set, Meredith came out on top," Pacers' Head Coach Hannah Marshall said. "Now we have the opportunity to grow over the next two weeks before we see them again."

Meredith, favored to repeat as USA South champ, was a measuring stick for the Pacers, picked third in the USA South. WPU held its own and then some against the Avenging Angels, pushing them to five sets.

William Peace was closing in on Meredith in the fifth set. Trailing 11-7, the Pacers pulled within 14-12 on Jordan Juanes' kill off an assist from Maegan Brylski. But their comeback hopes were dashed when Meredith scored a kill for the match-winning point.

Juanes led the Pacers with 12 kills and added 18 digs. Sarah Yates finished with 11 kills while Georgia Grace Anderson and Chassie Jacops each contributed eight kills. Anderson also added four blocks.

Brylski totaled 40 assists, nine digs and three aces. Vivian Camplin tallied 22 digs and Katie Arens added 16 digs.

Meredith led 15-11 in the opening set but the Pacers went on a 9-2 run for a 20-17 lead. The Avenging Angels tied the score 22-22 but two Meredith attack errors and a kill by Anderson pulled the Pacers to a 25-22 first-set win.

The second set was tightly contested as neither team could pull away. The score was knotted at 19 before the Avenging Angels outscored the Pacers 6-3 for a 25-22 victory.

Meredith easily won the third set 25-9 but William Peace returned the favor with a 25-14 win in the fourth set. That set up the fifth set showdown between the crosstown rivals.

The Pacers were ahead 3-1 and 4-3 but Meredith went on a rally to gain breathing room. With the score deadlocked at 5, the Avenging Angels scored five straight points for a 10-5 lead. The Pacers then went on a rally of their own, getting within 14-12 before Meredith ended the match with a kill.

The Pacers will look to regroup on the road against Brevard in Brevard, N.C., on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 12 p.m.
