Volleyball Wins Another Five-Setter, Leaves Marlin Invitational With 2-2 Mark Against Tough Competition

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – William Peace held its own in the season-opening Marlin Volleyball Invitational this weekend.

The Pacers finished 2-2 against stout competition in the two-day event. On Saturday, they held on to beat Geneva (Pa.) in a morning five-setter (25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 15-11) before falling to nationally-ranked Mary Washington in three sets (16-25, 15-25, 20-25) in the afternoon.

The victory over Geneva was the Pacers' second five-set victory in a 15-hour span. On Friday night, William Peace topped Marymount in five sets after dropping a three-set match to host Virginia Wesleyan earlier that day.

Against Geneva, the trio of Jordan Juanes, Chassie Jacops and Tameka Adams led the Pacers offensively. Juanes finished with 16 kills followed by Jacops with 15 kills and Adams with 10 kills.

Maegan Brylski capped a great weekend with 53 assists, among the top 10 best assist performances in program history. On Friday, the standout setter reached the career 1,000-assist milestone against Virginia Wesleyan.

Juanes added three aces and 16 digs and Jacops tied Adams and Jordyn Chinigo with one block. Savannah Hairr also totaled three aces and Brylski collected two aces in addition to 18 digs. Vivian Camplin posted a team-high 21 digs.

The Pacers went on an 8-1 run, including six straight points, for a 22-10 lead before wrapping up a 25-18 first-set win. The second set was closer but the Pacers, leading 19-18, outscored Geneva 6-3 down the stretch for a 25-21 second-set win.

William Peace started slowly in the third set. The Pacers fell behind 6-1 but managed to tie the score at 12-12. Geneva opened a 23-16 lead but the Pacers scored five consecutive points to get within 23-21. They were outscored 2-1, however, to lose the third set 25-22.

The fourth set was even throughout with the score tied 19-19 at one point. Trailing 24-21, William Peace scored back-to-back points to close within 24-23. Geneva scored the last point to win 25-23 and force a fifth set.

William Peace took charge in the last set after falling behind 3-0. The Pacers came back to tie the score 5-5, then scored five straight times for a 10-5 lead. After Geneva scored, the Pacers went on another run, this time four straight points for a 14-6 lead.

The Pacers needed one more point for victory, but Geneva made it interesting. A five-point rally by Geneva sliced the Pacers' lead to 14-11.

After a Pacers' timeout, Ashley Wyrick recorded a kill on Camplin's assist for the win.

After the win over Geneva, the Pacers took on Mary Washington, ranked 22th in the AVCA Division III preseason poll. Juanes finished with 11 kills and Brylski tallied 27 assists in the match. Defensively, Camplin had 11 digs and Hairr contributed 10 digs.

Next weekend, the Pacers will co-host the Raleigh Invitational with Meredith on Sept. 6-7. Matches will be held on both campuses.

William Peace will play in four of the seven matches held at home inside the Hermann Athletic Center.
