Big Third Inning Lifts Pacers To Game 2 Win Over Southern Virginia In Baseball Doubleheader

DURHAM, N.C. – William Peace erupted for nine runs in the third inning to trounce Southern Virginia 16-4 in the second game of a USA South baseball doubleheader at historic Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Saturday April 13.

The Pacers bounced back from a 16-8 first-game loss to split the doubleheader.

William Peace never looked back after turning a 2-1 deficit into a 10-2 lead in the third inning. The nine runs came on five hits and six walks including two back-to-back bases-loaded RBI walks. The Pacers also scored on an error.

Jacob Case and Griffin Sandstrum both sparked the Pacers in the third inning. Case started the rally with a two-run double and Sandstrum later added a two-RBI single for a 9-2 lead. Nick Tyler scored on a wild pitch to stretch the margin to 10-2.

Sandstrum belted a two-run homer over the tall rightfield fence for a 12-3 lead in the fourth inning. Dalton Frasier added an RBI double and Tyler followed with an RBI single in the sixth inning. Frasier had an RBI bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning and Cameron Barefoot hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to end the game due to the 12-run mercy rule.

The Pacers finished with 13 hits in the win, one less than they accumulated in the first game. Sandstrum drove in four runs and Frasier added three RBIs and three runs. Tyler and Case each posted two RBIs and Tyler tied Sandstrum, Adam Joseph and Tyler Stocksdale with two runs scored.

Maxwell Kasprowicz totaled three hits, four strikeouts and six walks in three innings for the win. His record improved to 3-1 overall. Ryan Manning scattered five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in the final five innings.

The Pacers trailed 9-8 entering the top of the ninth after scoring four runs in the eighth, but Southern Virginia scored seven runs for the final score in Game 1.

William Peace will host nationally ranked Christopher Newport in a non-conference game at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Sunday, April 14. Game time is 2 p.m.
