Pacers Fall To Huntingdon In Three OTs

CARY, N.C. - William Peace battled to the end in a 15-14 three overtime loss to Methodist in its USA South opener on Saturday at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Zachary Fields of William Peace scored with 15 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but Huntingdon made the game-winning sudden death goal with 1:15 remaining in the third overtime.

Dante Baranello and Aidan McNeely led the Pacers with three goals each. William English added two goals and four assists and Jamar Bell had two goals and two assists.

Zachary Fields also scored two goals for the Pacers and Noah Belote and Caleb Trahan each added a goal. Zack McConnell contributed an assist.

The ending capped a wild back-and-forth game which featured four lead changes and seven ties. The Pacers fell behind 3-0 but English scored his second goal in the second quarter to tie the score at 4-4. The Pacers took an 8-7 lead right before halftime on Fields' goal off Bell's assist.

McNeely scored in the third quarter to expand the lead to 9-7. Huntingdon answered with three straight goals but Belote and Baranello scored back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter for an 11-10 Pacers lead.

McNeely's goal later in the fourth put the Pacers up by two at 13-11 but Huntindgon scored three straight goals, the last one with 1:01 remaining for a 14-13 lead.

With time winding down, the Pacers made their last possession count with Fields scoring in the final seconds, sending the game into overtime. Though WPU eventually succumbed to Huntingdon at the end, the Pacer fans at the game were proud of the home team's effort.

The Pacers will take an 11-day break before returning home to host Methodist at WakeMed Soccer Park on Wednesday, March 27. Game time is 6 p.m.
