Pacers Battle For Three Quarters Before Falling To Methodist

CARY, N.C. – William Peace held Methodist, the USA South top scoring team, in check for most of the game in an 11-5 men's lacrosse defeat at WakeMed Soccer Park on Wednesday.

The Monarchs entered the game averaging a league-leading 14.1 goals per contest but was held to five goals with nearly a full quarter remaining in regulation. Better yet, Caleb Trahan of the Pacers scored to tie the game at 5-5.

Unfortunately, fatigue took its toll on the Pacers, who have a 16-player roster. Methodist, which has 34 players on its roster, scored six unanswered goals for the win.

Trahan led the Pacers with two goals and Jamar Bell added one goal and one assist. William English and Zachary Fields each scored one goal.

For three quarters, the Pacers played outstanding defense against the Monarchs, forcing 17 turnovers. Pacers goalie Dylan Sullivan totaled 17 saves against a Monarchs offense that attempted a whopping 62 shots.

The Pacers opened the scoring on Trahan's goal for a 1-0 lead. Methodist went ahead 2-1 but Bell tied the game with a goal in the second quarter.

The Monarchs, leading 3-2 at halftime, scored the first goal of the second half to expand their margin to two. English trimmed the deficit to 4-3 on a goal off Bell's assist but the Monarchs scored again for a two-goal lead in the third quarter.

The Pacers came back to tie the score at 5-5 on a third-quarter goal by Fields and a fourth-quarter goal by Trahan. Methodist then went on its final run to close out the game.

The Pacers will play at home against Southern Virginia in a USA South game on Monday, April 1. The contest will start at 1:30 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park.
