Pacers Roll Past Greensboro 65-50 For Second Straight Win

GREENSBORO, N.C. – William Peace appears to be hitting its stride at the right time.

Timothy Pettiford scored 22 points and Beau Bryant added 14 points as the Pacers came away with an impressive 65-50 men's basketball road win over Greensboro at Hanes Gymnasium on Saturday. The victory was the second straight for the Pacers and it came against a USA South opponent riding a three-game winning streak.

"A great team effort today on the road," Pacers Head Coach Claude Shields said. "We had great contributions from our bench – William Jenkins with five assists and Ryan Bottomley with some huge minutes to give our starters some rest. We have a big week ahead!"

William Peace (5-5 USA South, 10-11 overall) is currently sixth in the USA South standings but only one game behind three teams tied for second including Greensboro. With four games left including three straight at home, the Pacers are looking to finish strong and solidify a spot in the USA South Tournament, which begins Feb. 20. The top six teams in the eight-team league will advance to the tournament.

Both teams lived up to their defensive pedigrees in the first half. The Pacers, third in the league in scoring defense, limited the Pride (5-5 USA South, 10-11 overall) to 26 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes. William Peace couldn't find the range, either, (32 percent) but made enough to take a 22-13 lead into halftime.

The Pacers heated up after halftime behind the hot shooting of Pettiford, who scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the second half. The Pacers shot a sizzling 68 percent in the second half, including 63 percent behind the three-point arc, to open an 18-point lead against a Greensboro team that leads the USA South in scoring defense.

Pettiford continued his scoring streak of 20 or more points in four consecutive games. He finished 7 of 14 from the floor and 6 of 6 from the free throw line. The senior guard added nine rebounds for good measure, one off his season-high.

Bryant snatched seven rebounds in addition to 14 points. Michael Dulin and Ryan Lominack scored 10 each to give the Pacers a 20-7 advantage in bench points. They combined to make 8 of 13 shots including 4 of 7 from three-point range. Jenkins (five assists) and Bottomley (presence in the paint) contributed mightily as the reserves played a key role in the win.

Though they started slowly offensively, the Pacers thawed out by game's end. They were 49 percent from the floor and 42 percent behind the three-point arc overall. The Pacers were outstanding from the free throw line, making 11 of 13 for 85 percent. By contrast, the Pride shot 38.5 percent from the floor and 21 percent behind the three-point line.

Matthew Brown scored 15 points and added 10 rebounds for Greensboro, which lost by three at William Peace last month. This time, the Pacers made sure the game wouldn't come down to the final minutes.

Riding a wave of momentum, the Pacers will play at home three times in five days next week, starting with Pfeiffer on Tuesday, Feb. 6. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Hermann Athletic Center.
