Pacers Beat Brevard, Will Host USA South First-Round Game Tuesday As No. 4 Seed

BREVARD, N.C. – William Peace will host a first-round tournament game after knocking off Brevard 70-54 in the men's basketball regular-season finale at Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Pacers (8-6 USA South, 13-12 overall) elevated one spot to the USA South Tourney No. 4 seed after Saturday's win. They will face Brevard, the No. 5 seed, in a rematch at Hermann Athletic Center on Tuesday, Feb. 20. A game time has yet to be determined.

"We are excited to host a first-round game," WPU Head Coach Claude Shields said. "It's a new season. We are turning the page and ready for a big time matchup Tuesday night."

Timothy Pettiford pumped in 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the way. Beau Bryant flirted with a triple-double as he recorded a season-high 12 assists to go with nine points and nine rebounds.

Shawn Jones scored 12 points and Michael Dulin added 11 points. Ryan Lominack scored 10 points off the bench including 3 of 5 three-pointers.

It was a full team effort from the Pacers, who 46.4 percent, including 8 of 20 three-pointers, and held Brevard to 2 of 9 three-point shooting. Both William Peace and Brevard are among the conference's top three-point shooting teams.

The Pacers started fast and never trailed in winning their second straight game and their fifth victory in the last six contests. An 8-0 run to begin the game set the stage for the double-digit victory.

Bryant's three-pointer stretched the margin to 13-2. Brevard got the margin back to single digits briefly, but the Pacers finished the half strong. The Pacers opened a 33-15 lead, thanks to a 17-8 spurt. They went into halftime ahead 37-26.

In the second half, it was the Tornados who started fast. Brevard pulled within 41-36 in the first five minutes.

The Pacers' lead stayed in single digits until Jones' layup under the eight-minute mark. His basket put the Pacers up 56-45 and they never looked back.

The win avenged a 22-point home defeat to the Tornados last month and spoiled Brevard's Senior Day. On Tuesday, the Pacers will attempt to eliminate Brevard and move on to the tourney semifinals.
