Pacers Amass 14 Hits To Win First Game of Twinbill, Gain Split vs. Va. Wesleyan

CARY, N.C. – William Peace pounded out 14 hits to top Virginia Wesleyan 8-5 in the first game of its season-opening baseball doubleheader at the USA Baseball National Training Complex this past Saturday (Feb. 10).

In the second game, the Pacers fell 9-5 after leading midway in the contest.

Griffin Sandstrum, Jacob Case and Jake Dacunto powered the Pacers offensively in the first game. Sandstrum was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs and Case was 3-for-4 with one RBI. Dacunto batted 2-for-4 with a solo homer and three RBIs.

Trailing 1-0, the Pacers got their bats going early. Sandstrum drove in two runs with a double and Ian Turner followed with a double to score Sandstrum for a 3-1 first-inning lead. The Pacers led the rest of the way in the nine-inning game.

Nick Tubolino scored Dacunto on an RBI groundout in the third and Cameron Barefoot's RBI single to left field scored Case. The big inning was the fifth when the Pacers scored three runs for an 8-2 lead. Dacunto highlighted the inning with his first homer of the season, a shot over the left-center field wall. Sandstrum later scored on Will Thistle's RBI fielder's choice and Adam Joseph scored Turner on an RBI sacrifice fly.

Starting pitcher Jack McIntosh kept the Marlins at bay through five innings to pick up the win. He scattered six hits and struck out five.

The Marlins made things interesting in the ninth inning. They scored two runs and had the bases loaded with two outs. But Pacers' relief pitcher Ethan Hummel ended the game on a strikeout for the save.

The second game started like the first with the Pacers falling behind early, only to regain the lead in the first inning. Two errors by the Marlins allowed Barefoot and Nick Tyler to score. Turner added an RBI flyout to put the Pacers ahead 3-2.

The Pacers tacked on a run in the fourth and fifth innings for a 5-3 lead. Tyler's RBI single scored Tyler Stockdale in the fourth and Turner scored in the fifth. The Marlins rallied late, scoring six runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings to get the win.

Tyler led the Pacers in the second game with two RBIs and one run on 2-for-4 hitting. Turner added an RBI and a run.

The Pacers are back on the field this weekend. They travel to Christopher Newport for a Friday (Feb. 16) game at 2 p.m. followed by a three-game series against Mitchell College at the USA Baseball NTC starting Saturday, Feb. 17. Game times are 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, and 12 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18.
