Women's Basketball Holds Off Lynchburg 58-57

RALEIGH, N.C. – It only took three games for William Peace to gain its first women's basketball victory under new Head Coach Annalee Bollinger.

The Pacers built a third-period lead then held on to edge Lynchburg 58-57 at the Hermann Athletic Center on Saturday. William Peace won by forcing 24 turnovers and converting them into 18 points. Alayna Randolph had four of the Pacers' 13 steals, which led to Bollinger's first win as a head coach.

"Today was a hard-fought win for our group," Bollinger said. "They played together for 40 minutes. There were a lot of ups and downs but college basketball is a game of runs. I thought they did a great job staying poised and following the game plan to come out with our first win of the season."

Lynchburg (0-3 overall) committed nine turnovers between the third and early fourth period. The Pacers took advantage to build a nine-point lead at 49-40 on Ja'Naisja Baker's three-pointer.

The Hornets rallied back to tie the score at 53-53. Brene'a Daye converted a three-point play for a three-point Pacers' lead.

The Pacers (1-2 overall) were resilient in the last 16 seconds. A Lynchburg layup closed the margin to 56-55 but Daye responded with two free throws with six seconds left. The Hornets missed a potential game-tying three-pointer and scored a meaningless layup as time expired.

Jessica Worthey scored 22 points and added seven rebounds for the Pacers, who trailed 25-23 at the half. Daye scored 13 points off the bench and Zikira Henderson was close to a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds in addition to three steals. Randolph added four points, seven rebounds and four assists along with four steals.

Reserves Daye and Baker (eight points) outscored the Lynchburg bench 21-14. The Pacers had more fast break points (15-9) and turned the ball over only six times.

William Peace returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 20, against Johnson & Wales in Charlotte, N.C. Game time is 5 p.m.
