Volleyball Ousts Methodist 3-0, Reaches USA South Semifinals

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – During the regular season, William Peace fell to Methodist twice in three sets in the season series.

The No. 6 seed Pacers returned the favor on Tuesday, sweeping the No. 3 seed Monarchs 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-23) in the first round of the USA South Tournament at the Riddle Center. As a result, William Peace (18-15 overall) will travel to No. 2 seed Salem for a semifinal match on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7:15 p.m.

The Pacers are headed to the semis for the second time under third-year Head Coach Hannah Marshall, who had the team focused and poised against the Monarchs (23-6 overall). The victory was the third straight for the Pacers, who ended the regular season topping Brevard twice this past weekend.

"Today we came in and just played our game!," Marshall said. "Post-season is a new season, and we carried over a great ending to the regular season into this week. We are looking forward to practice tomorrow and the opportunity to extend our season!"

William Peace established the tone with a 14-7 lead in the first set and fought off several runs to stun Methodist, handing the Monarchs only their sixth loss this season.

William Peace relied on a diversified attack to gain the sweep. The Pacers posted a .270 attack percentage and totaled 11 blocks and 11 aces. The frontline play of Chassie Jacops, Georgia Grace Anderson, Jordyn Chinigo and Sarah Yates, and the all-around play Maegan Brylski was enough to give the Pacers the edge.

Jacobs collected 10 kills and five block assists to spark the Pacers. Anderson added nine kills and five block assists and Yates had nine kills and three block assists. Chinigo tallied two solo blocks and three block assists and Jordan Juanes totaled seven kills and two aces.

Brylski finished with 32 assists, five aces and 12 digs to go along with three kills. Savannah Hairr contributed four aces and 11 digs and Jacqueline Janecek had eight digs.

After leading 14-7 in the first set, the Pacers relinquished the lead but never waivered. They trailed 17-16, 18-17 and 19-18 but scored seven of the last nine points for the 25-21 set win.

The Pacers spurted to another lead in the second set. They led 10-7 but could not extend it as the momentum swung back-and-forth. With the score tied 24-24, the Pacers scored on Anderson's block and a Brylski kill from Hairr for a 26-24 win to take a 2-0 lead.

William Peace started slowly in the third set after blazing out the gates first two sets. Methodist opened a 14-10 lead but Brylski, the conference's ace leader, ignited a 7-0 run with four consecutive aces. The rally pushed the Pacers ahead 17-14.

Another run – this time 4-0 - padded the lead to 21-15 but Methodist had one last gasp left. The Monarchs got within 24-23 but Chinigo's block ousted the Monarchs and sent the Pacers to the tourney's Final Four.
