Men's Soccer Extends Win Streak On Senior Night; Will Host USA South Tourney Game Saturday

CARY, N.C. – The William Peace men's soccer team had plenty to celebrate Wednesday on Senior Night.

First, the Pacers honored five seniors before their matchup against Greensboro at WakeMed Soccer Park. After the ceremony, they proceeded to trounce the Pride 5-0 in the regular-season finale.

As a result, the Pacers, seeded fourth, will host a USA South Conference Tournament first-round game. William Peace (3-3-1 USA South, 6-6-3 overall) will face No. 5 Methodist on Saturday, Nov. 2, at WakeMed Soccer Park at a time to be announced.

Their chances of making the tournament seemed bleak three weeks ago. The Pacers were winless in the conference and were coming off a 1-0 road loss to Brevard on Oct. 12.

Since then, the Pacers have put together a remarkable run to finish among the top four teams in the regular season. It started with a 1-0 win over Southern Virginia on Oct. 19, and the Pacers followed up with a 2-1 victory on the road against Methodist this past Saturday.

On Wednesday, the Pacers cruised past the Pride (0-5-2 USA South, 2-13-3 overall) for their third straight win. Ausar Omwenga and Brennan Lagana, one of five seniors, had big nights in the rout. Omwenga collected two goals and two assists and Lagana had two goals and one assist for the Pacers, who outshot Greensboro 20-8.

Jorge Lemus, another senior, added a goal and Gavin Beaupre contributed an assist. A stellar defense spearheaded by goalie Ayden Miller shut out Greensboro.

Omwenga assisted on Lagana's goal for a 1-0 lead and later scored off Beaupre's assist as the Pacers entered halftime leading 2-0. The Pacers really poured it on in the second half, scoring three goals for the final score. The five goals and the victory margin were team-highs this season.

Lemus, the team's career scoring leader, got in the act in the second half. He scored off Lagana's assist for a 3-0 lead before Lagana scored again off Omwenga's assist. Omwenga finished off the Pride with an unassisted goal for the final score.

It was a game that seniors Lagana, Lemus, Jean Murillo, Alex Macedo and Foster Crenshaw will never forget. The hottest team in the USA South, the Pacers will look to continue their win streak in the postseason.
