Men's Soccer Blanks Methodist To Reach USA South Semifinals

CARY, N.C. – The William Peace men's soccer team continued its late-season surge on Saturday.

The Pacers, seeded fourth, blanked No. 5 seed Methodist 3-0 in a USA South Tournament first-round game at WakeMed Soccer Park. The victory was the fourth in a row for the streaking Pacers, who find themselves in the semifinals for the fifth straight year.

William Peace (7-6-3 overall) will square off against N.C. Wesleyan, the No. 1 seed, in a rematch of last year's semifinal matchup. The contest takes place in Rocky Mount, N.C., on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.

N.C. Wesleyan and William Peace were picked first and second, respectively, in the USA South Preseason Poll. It took the Pacers a while to get going, but now they are clicking on all cylinders.

Winless in the conference three weeks ago, the Pacers have given up one goal in their four-game win streak. Ironically, the goal was against Methodist last Saturday in a 2-1 road win.

On Saturday, the Pacers continued their version of the Steel Curtain as a defense sparked by Jean Murillo, Kwame Semackor, Zach Marlier, Andrew Mesnard and goalkeeper Ayden Miller made sure the Monarchs (6-9-4 overall) wouldn't score this time. It was the Pacers' third shutout during the win streak.

The offense was also clicking as Jorge Lemus scored twice and Ausar Omwenga added a goal for the runaway win. Ethan Gillette and Gavin Beaupre each collected an assist.

"Today was a really satisfying win," Pacers' Head Coach Ryan Huber said. "I thought we put it all together in all phases of the game. We've known all year what we are capable of. It's nice to show it the last few games. The guys have been working really hard staying locked in on the details that we stress in training. We're excited to get another opportunity on Wednesday to extend our season."

Behind their relentless offense (14 shots) and rock-steady defense, the Pacers pulled away from the Monarchs. Lemus scored the first goal on a penalty kick in the first half to give the Pacers a 1-0 halftime lead. The Pacers tacked on two goals in the second half on the feet of Omwenga and Lemus. Gillette assisted on Omwenga's goal and Beaupre gained the assist on Lemus' second goal.

Methodist, attempting only six shots, could not muster any offense to keep pace.

Now only two road games stand in the way of a conference title. But the Pacers, the hottest team in the league, are up for the challenge.
