Pacers Catch Fire After Slow Start In Loss To N.C. Wesleyan

RALEIGH, N.C. – The William Peace women's basketball team caught fire after a slow first period, but could not overcome an early deficit in a 97-79 loss to N.C. Wesleyan at the Hermann Athletic Center on Saturday.

Tanaesha Ellison led William Peace with 38 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and three blocks and Nautica Smiley added a season-high 29 points and seven rebounds. The backcourt duo combined for 67 of the Pacers' 79 points.

Ellison's 38 points is the second-highest in the USA South Atlantic Conference this season. She has three of the top four individual scoring games this season, including a league-best 43 points.

Hannah Lewis chipped in seven points for the Pacers, who outscored N.C. Wesleyan 70-67 after falling behind 30-9 at the end of the first period. The Pacers (4-8 USA South, 6-12 overall) came alive after the first period but couldn't recover from a 21-point deficit.

Ja'Naisja Baker collected four assists, four rebounds and two steals for the Pacers, who outscored the Battling Bishops 42-34 in the paint, mostly on Ellison's drives to the bucket.

Kayrisma Harrison led six double-figure scorers with 19 points and added 13 rebounds for the Battling Bishops (9-2 USA South, 9-9 overall), who shot 60 percent in the first period and outrebounded the Pacers 55-34 which led to a 30-10 advantage in second-chance points. Their bench contributed mightily with 32 points.

The Pacers play back-to-back home games next weekend. They host Southern Virginia on Friday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m. and Greensboro on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m. The Greensboro contest will be played on Senior Day.
