Bryant Becomes Pacers' Career Basketball Scoring Leader

STAUNTON, Va. – William Peace standout Beau Bryant became the university's career scoring leader in men's basketball on Saturday.

Needing two points entering the contest against Mary Baldwin, Bryant finished with seven for a career total of 1,202 points. He surpassed former star Chris Thomas, who scored 1,196 points from 2013 to 2017.

Bryant, a Durham, N.C., native, looks to pass first before shooting in games, making his achievement even more impressive. He leads the USA South Conference in assists per game.

"The best part about him breaking the record is he is a pass-first guy!," Head Coach Claude Shields said. "Beau is a tremendous ambassador of our program. Breaking the scoring record speaks to his work ethic, consistency and durability. Since he stepped foot on campus, he has been the most disciplined worker on our team."

His accomplishment was the Pacers' biggest highlight in a 79-60 loss to Mary Baldwin on the road at the Physical Activity Center.

Bryant reached the milestone on a layup around the six-minute mark in the first half. The basket pulled the Pacers within 28-22 after leading by three earlier in the half. They went into the locker room down 39-30 at halftime, but Mary Baldwin stretched the margin to double-digits in the second half.

Timothy Pettiford scored 18 points and Rashaun Tomlin added 11 points for the Pacers, who battled Mary Baldwin for the USA South lead on Saturday. Tyler Parton scored nine points, Ryan Lominack chipped in eight points and Shawn Jones ripped down 10 rebounds.

Bryant also contributed four rebounds and three steals for the Pacers (2-2 USA South, 7-7 overall), who played on the road two straight days this weekend. Quentin Hart scored 27 points for Mary Baldwin (4-0 USA South, 8-7 overall).

Despite the loss, the story of the game was Bryant. With 10 regular-season contests remaining, he could push the record into the stratosphere.

His first appearance as the William Peace career scoring leader is Wednesday, Jan. 17, at home against Methodist. The contest starts at 7:30 p.m.
