Volleyball Falls in Four Sets in Semi-Final Game to #1 Covenant

DANVILLE, VA -- The William Peace University volleyball team competed in the semi-finals of the USA South Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Pacers fought hard through four sets against the #1 seed, Covenant College, falling 3 sets to 1 (25-21, 19-25, 19-25, 14-25).

The Scots of Covenant College took an early 9-5 lead in set one as the Pacers looked to fight the offensive attack from Hannah Harris and Jessica Seehorn. A service error by Covenant's Hannah Stewart, would put momentum back into the Pacers hands as they scored two points in a row off of errors by the Scots bringing the score to 7-11. Covenant would continue to charge forward, however after a long rally with the Pacers and Scots going back and forth with several key defensive stops, an error by the Scots on an attack would put the Pacers within reach, trailing 15-11. The Pacers would score seven unanswered points down the line to takeover the lead for the first time in the match 22-18. A kill by Mya Parks followed by an error on Covenant's side would put the Pacers at set point. Sha'Nice Frazier brought in the final kill of the set, assisted by Liana Solomon to conclude set one, 25-21.

Set two began with the Pacers in front with a 4-2 lead. The Scots fired back with their attack taking the lead, 11-9. Sha'Nice Frazier would tally 3 kills for the Pacers in the second set but the efforts. Through several attacking errors on both ends, the Pacers would make the game close with a kill from Sha'Nice Frazier and an error from the Scots, to bring the score 18-16 in favor of Covenant. Despite the fight from the Pacers, the Scots sealed the second set, 25-19.

The Scots took a quick lead in the third set, scoring three points off of two Covenant kills and a WPU attacking error. The Pacers would jump on the board first with a service error from the Scots followed by a kill by Mya Parks, putting the score at 4-2. An attack error and four unanswered kills by Covenant put the Pacers behind 9-2. A string of attacking errors and service errors by the Scots brought the Pacers back as they trailed 11-6. A kill by Brienna Laskowski followed by a block by Liana Solomon and Lindsay Alford would catch the Pacers up to trail the Scots 12-10. Coming out of a timeout called by Covenant, the Pacers would commit four errors, putting the Scots up 17-12. The attacks from Covenant's jessica Seehorn, Allie Jakes, and Ginny Moore would give the Scots a 23-16 lead in the final possessions. Kills by Brienna Laskowski and Sha'Nice Frazier would keep the Pacers battling, but the Scots would finish victorious in the third set, 25-19.

Lindsay Alford and Hailey Stout began the fourth set with two commanding kills to set the tone for the Pacers, however the Scots would tie it up 2-2 before going on a 6-0 run to take the lead 8-2. Following a Pacer timeout, kills by Mya Parks and Carson Williams would catch the Pacers up to trail 11-4. Two back-to-back kills by Covenant's Ginny Moore would push the Scots ahead as the Pacers tried to fend off their consistent offense. Errors would be the downfall in the fourth set as the Scots took a 22-12 lead. A kill by Mya Parks and an error by the Scots would bring the final points for the Pacers as Covenant charged forward to take the fourth and final set, 25-14.

The Pacers conclude their season with a (19-17) overall record and finished regular conference play ranked second with a regular conference season record of (13-3). The Pacers received several conference honors throughout their season. Carson Williams was named Defensive Player of the Week, three times, as well as First Team All-Conference, First Team All-Conference East Division, and Libero of the Year. Liana Solomon received Player of the week once, was named to the First Team All-Conference team as wells as First Team All-Conference East Division. Lindsay Alford was named to the USA South Second Team All-Conference East Division team and Josie Richardson was named to the USA South All-Sportsmanship team. This season marked the first year that WPU has advanced to the semi-finals of the conference tournament and featured a team with numbers breaking several university records. Congratulations to the WPU volleyball team on a wonderful season.
