RALEIGH, N.C. -- The William Peace University women's volleyball team faced Meredith College on Tuesday, October 31st in the quarter-finals of the USA South Conference Tournament. The Pacers came into the matchup with a (13-3) record in the conference and (18-16) overall, which was good for the number 2 seed in the conference. The Angels were (13-4) in the conference and (16-12) overall, earning them the number 3 seed. Meredith defeated Greensboro College (3-1) in the first round game played at William Peace University earlier in the evening.
Meredith would take an initial 3-1 lead in set one, but WPU battled to tie the game at (6-6) on a kill by
Sha'Nice Frazier. A kill by
Hailey Stout would again tie up the set 8-8. The Pacers would then go on a 6 point run to lead 15-9. WPU continued to lead for the rest of the first set even as Meredith began to climb back, winning 25-17.
In the second set, Meredith again took a primary 3-1lead. WPU tied up the set at 5-5, later taking a 7-6 lead on a kill by
Brienna Laskowski. Set two proved to be a more back-and-forth matchup, but WPU would generate a 4 point streak when the set was tied 8-8 to give them a 12-8 lead. The Pacers went on another 4 point run at 14-12 for an 18-12 lead. The Angels fought back, but WPU would win the set 25-17.
WPU grabbed an early lead in set three, scoring five straight before allowing Meredith a point. The Pacers would continue to control the third set, leading 11-3 on kill by
Liana Solomon. Both teams would then trade points back-and-forth, with the Pacers going on a 4 point streak with the score at 19-11 to gain a 23-11 lead. They would then win the set 25-12, sweeping the match 3-0.
Hailey Stout,
Liana Solomon, and
Lindsay Alford led the team in kills with 7 each, while
Liana Solomon led with 22 assists.
Carson Williams continued to lead the team defensively with 19 digs. Williams leads the conference in digs with 713 on the season, with a significant margin separating her from her competitors. During her time at WPU, Williams has accumulated 2,163 digs thus far. Williams breaks the current record held for career digs (1630), set by WPU alum, Maddie Irvin in 2015.
The Pacers now look ahead to the semi-finals held at Averett University on Friday, November 3 at 4:00 p.m. The Pacers will face Covenant College who holds the #1 seed for the West Division of the USA South.
