CARY, N.C. – William Peace University men's soccer battled to a 1–1 draw with Averett University on Sunday afternoon at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Pacers move to 1-0-1 on the year following the result, while the Cougars also stand at 1-0-1.
Averett struck first just eight minutes into the contest, as Daniel Sierra finished a chance to put the Cougars ahead 1–0 on a free kick. Despite trailing early, Peace generated consistent pressure throughout the opening half, outshooting Averett 10–4 before the break. Senior forward Ausar Omwenga was a threat from the start, recording three first-half shots on goal, all turned away by Cougar goalkeeper Anibal Lopez.
The Pacers broke through in the 56th minute when Omwenga buried one off of a great run, evening the match at 1–1. Omwenga finished with a game-high six shots, including four on target, to lead the Pacer attack.
Peace dominated the stat sheet, finishing with a 20–6 advantage in total shots and 6–2 in corner kicks. The contest also featured a physical second half, with five yellow cards issued after halftime as both sides fought hard until the end.
William Peace will return to action on Saturday, September 6th as they head to their first away opponent of the season, at Randolph College.
