Softball Drops Doubleheader to Mary Baldwin

RALEIGH, N.C. -  Game One: The William Peace University softball team opened the game with an offensive burst but couldn't maintain momentum, falling 15–6 to Mary Baldwin on Saturday morning in Raleigh.

The Pacers jumped out to a 4–3 lead after the first inning but were unable to recover after a massive six-run third inning by the Fighting Squirrels. Freshman Isabelle Olson gave the Pacers a spark early, launching a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to cap off a four-run frame. She finished the day 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Lacy Smothers also had a strong showing at the plate, collecting two hits and driving in two runs in the second inning to extend the WPU lead to 6–3.

However, Mary Baldwin's bats proved relentless, pounding out 17 hits across the game. The third inning proved to be the turning point as the visitors sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring six runs and reclaiming the lead for good. They added insurance with four more runs in the fifth and two in the sixth, capitalizing on a combination of timely hits and defensive miscues by WPU.

Pitchers Reagan Stewart and Haley Joyce split time in the circle for the Pacers, with Stewart taking the loss after giving up nine runs (six earned) over 3.1 innings. Joyce allowed six more runs in relief as the Fighting Squirrels consistently kept runners on base.

Game Two: Despite a powerful first-inning grand slam from Isabelle Olson, William Peace softball came up just short in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, falling 6–5 to Mary Baldwin in a tightly contested match up.

The Pacers stormed back after a two-run top of the first from the Fighting Squirrels, responding with four runs of their own thanks to Olson's blast over the left field fence—her second homer of the day. Olson finished the game 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs and continued to be a force in the middle of the order.

WPU added another run in the second on an RBI double by Megan McAnany, pushing the lead to 5–2, but from there, Mary Baldwin's pitching held the Pacers scoreless.

Pacers starter Kimberly Bordeaux battled through five innings but was charged with all six runs allowed (all earned), including a three-run fifth inning that flipped the game in Mary Baldwin's favor.

Defensive miscues and timely walks opened the door for the Squirrels, who took advantage with smart base running and clutch hitting—including an RBI single that would stand as the game-winner. The Pacers threatened late, putting runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't find the key hit to bring the tying run home.

Kiersten Cox and Marissa Fuller each added a hit in the loss, while Cierra Lear reached base three times on walks.

The Pacers will look to regroup as they continue through conference play next week.
