BUENA VISTA, Va. - After their first full week off of the season, the Pacers were back in action Saturday night, crossing the northern border to take on Southern Virginia.
Both squads came out focused on feeling the match out. There were no rapid advancements of the ball or grade A offensive chances for the first 10 minutes of the match.
The Pacers earned the first good look of the night when Ibra Ndiaye, who has been all over the pitch for the Pacers in their last 3, sent one just over the bar in the 12th minute.
The Knights came back with a raise, putting one on frame in the 13th minute, forcing Ayden Miller into his first save of the evening.
10 more minutes of stalemate passed until Ibra Ndiaye got another chance, putting this one on frame. However, Knight goalkeeper Troy Chamberlain was up to the task, keeping the score knotted at nil.
In the 29th, improved ball movement earned Peace another solid chance. Once again, it was the golden freshman Ibra Ndiaye on the business end, and he tucked the ball away, giving the Pacers a 1-0 lead.
SVU tried to respond quickly, but Ayden Miller denied the knights again in the 30th and the 1-0 lead was preserved.
Nathan Cochran nearly added a second for the Pacers in the 33rd, but Knights goalkeeper Troy Chamberlain kept what could have been an early dagger out of the net.
After a handful of substitutions, both teams settled back into a struggle for sustained possession, and the Pacer lead held at 1-0 when the halftime whistles sounded.
The second half started much like the first, neither team seemed to get a strong foothold in the first 10 minutes.
SVU gained the first chance of the half in the 56th, but Miller stood tall again and kept the Knights off the scoreboard.
SVU came back in the 59th, and Miller made another save. It seemed like nothing was going to get by the senior on this night.
Another long period of possession change around midfield followed the flurry of Knight chances, until Ausar Omwenga got a couple shots off in the 76th and 79th minutes, but neither attempt was on frame.
However, Omwenga pounced on a bad SVU defensive turnover around midfield in the 82nd. The prolific forward flew down the field with the gift of an opportunity and laced one into the low right corner to double the Pacer lead.
The 2 goal cushion proved to be more than enough as the Pacers picked up their 3rd conference win on Saturday, putting them back into a tie for first place in the USA South.
Peace has yet another full week off before welcoming Methodist to Cary next Saturday.
