Pacers Nearly Top Nationally-Ranked N.C. Wesleyan In Baseball

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – William Peace nearly pulled off a win against nationally-ranked N.C. Wesleyan in a USA South baseball game on Sunday.

The Pacers led 9-8 in the bottom of the ninth inning, but 22nd-ranked N.C. Wesleyan scored two runs to sweep the three-game weekend series.

The game featured three lead changes and 27 hits, including 13 for the Pacers. Jake Dacunto and Nick Tubolino both led the Pacers with two RBIs, including Tubolino's third home run in three days.

Tubolino went 3-for-4 at the plate with a solo homer and two runs scored. Dalton Frasier batted 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Jacob Cace went 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Tubolino and Dacunto sparked the Pacers to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. They both hit RBI singles and Nick Tyler scored on an infield error.

N.C. Wesleyan moved ahead 5-3 but Tubolino's homer pulled the Pacers within one run in the third inning.

The Pacers trailed 7-4 in the sixth inning, but they put together a five-run rally to pull ahead 9-7. Griffin Sandstrum started the spurt with an RBI single and Adam Joseph added an RBI groundout. Cole Thompson singled in Sandstrum and Thompson later scored on Tyler's single. Dacunto drove in Frasier on a fielder's choice.

N.C. Wesleyan pulled within 9-8 in the sixth inning. The Pacers' one-run lead held up until the bottom ninth.

The Pacers will host Southern Virginia in a USA South three-game weekend series starting Friday, April 12, at Cleveland High School in Clayton, N.C. The first pitch is 6 p.m.

Both teams will play a doubleheader at Historic Durham Athletic Park in Durham, N.C. on Saturday, April 13. The first game is at 1 p.m. and the second game will start at approximately 4 p.m.

NOTE: On Friday, Pacers Head Coach Charlie Long was honored as part of the 25-year reunion of the1999 N.C. Wesleyan national championship team. Long, who is in the NCWU Hall of Fame, was head coach of the national title squad.
