Late Game Heroics Key Pacers To Softball Sweep Over Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va. – Late-game heroics helped William Peace outlast Mary Baldwin 8-5 and 3-2 in a USA South softball doubleheader on Saturday.

Both wins moved the Pacers to third place in the USA South standings at 4-2. The Pacers, 14-12 overall, are only behind conference leader Pfeiffer (7-1) and Greensboro (5-1).

"Our bats came alive in the Mary Baldwin sweep, hitting four home runs and being successful in all aspects of the game," Pacers Head Coach Charlie Dobbins said. "It might've been our best defensive doubleheader of the year. Hats off to Haley Joyce, coming in and saving game one and then coming back in game two and getting the win. We hope to see a lot of folks at the ballpark on Tuesday as we host crosstown rival Meredith."

The Pacers led 6-5 entering the seventh inning of the first game but Megan McAnany hit a two-run double to give her team some breathing room. Haley Joyce got three straight outs to earn the save after Mary Baldwin had players on first and second base with no outs.

Kimberly Bordeaux scattered seven hits, struck out four and walked none to improve her pitching record to 5-1. Joyce gave up four hits and recorded two strikeouts in three innings.

Reanna Braswell hit a three-run homer in the second inning to erase a 2-0 deficit for the Pacers. Adanya Day hit the Pacers' second homer of the game in the third inning for a 4-2 lead.

Mary Baldwin tied the game 4-4 in the bottom third, but the Pacers regained the lead at 6-4 on Preston Hawkins' two-run single in the fifth inning. A Mary Baldwin solo home run cut the margin to 6-5 before McAnany's two-RBI hit in the seventh inning.

The Pacers outhit the Fighting Squirrels 12-11 including four doubles in addition to the two home runs.

William Peace pulled out the second game when Lydia Hunt hit an RBI single for a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning. Mary Baldwin loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but the runner on third base was called out for interference and shortstop Logan Ayers made a diving, spectacular catch on a pop fly past third base for the victory.

Joyce gained the win in relief after allowing one hit and no runs in three innings. Day and Reagan Stewart each hit solo homers which pulled the Pacers even at 2-2 in the fourth inning.

The Pacers won despite being outhit 9-5.

William Peace returns home after the four-game weekend to play crosstown rival Meredith in a USA South doubleheader at the WPU Softball Complex on Tuesday, April 9. The first game starts at 2 p.m. and the second game begins at approximately 4 p.m.
