Pacers Rally Late In Both Games Before Falling To Meredith In Softball Doubleheader

RALEIGH, N.C. – William Peace rallied in the seventh inning of both games but fell 3-2 and 2-1 to crosstown rival Meredith in a USA South softball doubleheader at the WPU Softball Complex on Tuesday.

"It was a pitcher's duel in both games," Pacers Head Coach Charlie Dobbins said. "We just came up a little short."

In the first game, the Pacers trailed 3-0 heading into the seventh but nearly tied the score in the bottom of the inning. Adanya Day hit an RBI single to score Cianna Lear and Kierston Cox singled to score Rachel Mori. Preston Hawkins, who pinch ran for Cox, was on first base with two outs but the Pacers fouled out to end the contest.

Hawkins smacked a one-out triple in the fifth inning, but the Pacers hit into a double play to end the inning.

In the second game, the Pacers trailed again in the seventh – this time by a 2-0 score – before rallying to make it interesting. Megan McAnany drove in the only Pacers run on a two-out single that scored Cox, who reached base on a double and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. The game ended on a strikeout with McAnany on first base.

The Pacers' pitching staff was impressive despite the losses. Reagan Stewart scattered five hits, struck out four, walked one and allowed two earned runs in seven complete innings in the first game.

Starting pitcher Haley Joyce scattered seven hits, walked two batters and allowed two earned runs in five innings of the second game. Relief pitcher Erin Miles gave up one hit, walked one batter and gave up no runs in two innings.

The Pacers will play against Wednesday, April 10, at nationally ranked Pfeiffer in Misenheimer, N.C. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
