Hot Hitting, Pitching Propel Pacers To Doubleheader Sweep Over Ferrum

RALEIGH, N.C. – It took William Peace six innings to find its batting groove.

Once the Pacers did, they swept Ferrum in grand fashion on Red, White and Blue Day at the WPU Softball Complex, winning 10-2 in six innings and 9-0 in five innings on Wednesday. The Pacers cranked out 23 hits to take both games in the non-conference doubleheader.

"We had two great wins today over an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) team," WPU Head Coach Charlie Dobbins said. "We hit the ball very well and pitched exceptionally. Shout out to Angela Jones, who now leads the nation in triples (5). "

Megan McAnany collected six RBIs and Reagan Stewart tallied four RBIs to lead the offensive surge, which started in the sixth inning of the first game. The Pacers struggled at the plate in the first five innings as they trailed 2-1 entering the sixth.

That all changed in the sixth inning. The Pacers (10-10 overall) hit three straight doubles to spark a nine-run rally that put a sudden ending to what was a close game. Taryn Shelton and Preston Hawkins both hit doubles and later scored on McAnany's two-run double for a 3-2 lead, the Pacers first of the game.

Adanya Day recorded an RBI on a bases-loaded walk and Stewart followed with a two-run single to expand the lead to 6-2. Ayers doubled in two runs and Shelton followed with an RBI single to push the score to 9-2. McAnany capped the inning with an RBI double that stopped the game due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Stewart scattered four hits and gave up one earned run in six innings for the pitching victory. McAnany batted 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs and Shelton was 2-for-2 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Day smacked a two-run homer over the tall right field fence in the fifth inning to close the deficit to 2-1. Seven of the Pacers' 11 hits went for extra bases.

Their hitting carried over into the second game. Five of the Pacers' 12 hits were in the first inning as they opened a 4-0 lead. The big hit was a two-run triple from Stewart that put the Pacers on the scoreboard. Ayers added an RBI single and McAnany had an RBI groundout.

Shelton hit an RBI double for a 5-0 lead in the second inning. The Pacers shut the door on Ferrum (2-14 overall) in the fourth inning, scoring four runs for a 9-0 lead. Angelina Jones scored on a wild pitch to start the spurt. McAnany added a two-run single and Erin Miles hit an RBI double. Miles retired the side in the top fifth to end the game.

Miles pitched a six-hit shutout in five innings to get the victory. McAnany finished with three RBIs and Stewart was 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Ayers batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Jones was 3-for-3 with a double, triple and three runs scored. The Pacers collected five extra base hits.

The Pacers start USA South Conference play on the road Saturday, March 23, against Southern Virginia in Buena Vista, Va. The first game begins at 1 p.m. and the second game starts at approximately 3 p.m.

"I think today sets us up to be successful as we go into conference play," Dobbins said. "I see lots of confidence in our athletes as we move toward our first conference game this weekend."

The Pacers honored two decorated servicemen during a pre-game ceremony on Red, White and Blue Day. U.S. Marine Warrant Officer Douglas A. Haynesworth Jr. and Korean War Veteran Lamar Caulder were introduced to the fans. Haynesworth, who currently attends WPU as a student, threw out the first pitch.
