Pacers Bounce Back To Edge Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - William Peace bounced back from Friday's tough loss to beat Methodist 3-2 on Saturday in the second game of their USA South three-game baseball series at Armstrong-Shelley Field.

Starting pitcher Grady Swinson combined with relievers Maxwell Kasprowicz and Justin Hamilton on a four-hitter after the Pacers allowed 14 hits in a 16-0 loss on Friday. Swinson quieted the Methodist bats in 5.1 innings of work, allowing only one hit and one run for his first win this season. Hamilton held the Monarchs hitless and scoreless in the final 1.1 innings for his second save this season.

"Grady gave us a quality start and Max and Justin were tremendous in relief," Pacers Head Coach Charlie Long said. "I'm really proud of the way the entire team bounced back."

The Monarchs threatened with the potential tying run on base in the eight and ninth innings, but Hamilton forced a flyout for the final out in the eighth and struck out consecutive batters in the ninth to end the game.

Griffin Sandstrum was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a one-run single that scored Cole Thompson for a 1-0 first inning lead. Sandstrum singled again to score Thompson in the seventh inning for a 3-1 lead. 

The Monarchs scored a run in the eighth inning to close within 3-2 but the Pacers' pitching and defense keyed the victory.

Jacob Cace was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI single that scored Adam Joseph in the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead. Joseph was 2-for-4 and Jake Dacunto was 2-for-3 for the Pacers, who finished with 10 hits.

Both teams will play the third and final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Fayetteville, N.C.
