Pacers Split Season-Opening Doubleheader At Home

RALEIGH, N.C. – William Peace split a softball season-opening doubleheader against Sweet Briar, winning the second game 12-4 in five innings at the WPU Softball Field on Saturday.

The Pacers bounced back after falling 13-9 in eight innings in the opening game.

Adanya Day was 5-for-5 at the plate with five RBIs and two runs scored for the Pacers. Logan Ayers scored four runs and added two RBIs and Reagan Stewart was 3-for-6 with three RBIs, a double and two runs scored. Stewart was the winning pitcher in the second game.

Cierra Lear was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored and Preston Hawkins had two doubles, one RBI and one run scored on 3-for-6 hitting. Megan Hobbs finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored.

"We battled the weather and a good young team from Sweet Briar to earn the split," WPU Head Coach Charlie Dobbins said. "Hats off to Adanya Day. I'd also like to recognize rookies Cierra Lear and Megan Hobbs."

Day was 3-for-3 with four RBIs in the second-game win. Her two-run single in the first inning erased an early 2-0 deficit and started a six-run rally to put the Pacers up 6-2. Hobbs added an RBI single and Hawkins drove in a run with a double to extend the lead. Marissa Fuller had an RBI groundout and Hawkins scored from third base on a throw to second base to cap the rally.

Hobbs hit an RBI single in the second inning and Day hit an RBI single in the fourth inning for an 8-2 lead.

Sweet Briar scored two runs in the fifth to slice the lead, but the Pacers tacked on four runs in the bottom half of the inning to end the game via the eight-run mercy rule. Megan McAnany smacked a solo home run and Ayers added a two-run double. Day ended the game with an RBI single that scored Ayers.

Stewart scattered five hits in five innings for the pitching win.

In the first game, the Pacers opened a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Stewart collected an RBI double and McAnany had an RBI groundout. Stewart scored the third run on a passed ball.
Sweet Briar came back to take a 6-3 lead in the sixth inning. Day's RBI single pulled the Pacers within two but the Vixens responded with three runs in the top of the seventh for a 9-4 lead.

The Pacers rallied in the bottom seventh to tie the game. Lydia Hunt started the five-run surge with an RBI single and Lear added a two-run single. Another two-run single, this time from Stewart, forced an eighth inning.

Unfortunately, Sweet Briar scored four runs in the top of the eighth to gain the win.

The Pacers are back in action in the Huntingdon Invitational on Feb. 24-25. The site is Montgomery, Ala.

"I look forward to the great competition we will face next weekend in Alabama," Dobbins said. "We will continue to focus on getting better every game as we move into hopefully some warmer days."
