Volleyball Tops Salem, Eastern Mennonite In WPU Tri-Match

RALEIGH, N.C. – William Peace overcame slow starts in two matches to beat Salem and Eastern Mennonite in a volleyball tri-match it hosted on Saturday at the Hermann Athletic Center.

The Pacers stunned USA South leader Salem 3-1 (14-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-14) in the first match and rallied to beat Eastern Mennonite 3-2 (17-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-22, 15-10) in the third match. The victories improved their record to 7-8 in the USA South and 15-14 overall.

The wins snapped a four-game losing skid for the Pacers, who were coming off a five-set loss to N.C. Wesleyan on Tuesday. N.C. Wesleyan is near the bottom of the USA South standings.

But the Pacers were a different team against Salem (13-3 USA South, 25-5 overall). After losing the first set, the Pacers took a close second set and cruised to victories in the third and fourth sets for a huge conference win.

William Peace dug a huge hole against Eastern Mennonite (8-16 overall), falling behind 2-0. But the Pacers regrouped and took the last three sets for the non-conference win.

"Everything seemed to just click today in moments where we needed it to!," Pacers' Head Coach Hannah Marshall said. "We have been focusing on competing and improving every day to prepare for the post-season, and we definitely saw that today with our win over Salem and a gritty reverse-sweep over EMU. Again, we look forward to being in the gym on Monday for the opportunity to continue to get better!"

Against Salem, Georgia Grace Anderson led a balanced attack with 11 kills and three aces. Jordan Juanes and Madeline Simpson each had nine kills with Juanes adding 19 digs.

Maegan Brylski totaled eight kills, 36 assists and 11 digs. Katie Arens collected four service aces and eight digs and Jacqueline Janecek and Savannah Hairr added 15 digs each. Chassie Jacops and Jordyn Chinigo each had three blocks.

Simpson came off the bench to give the Pacers a spark. With the Pacers already down 1-0 and trailing 22-19 in the second set, Simpson tallied three of the next four Pacers' kills to push WPU ahead 24-22. Her fourth kill won the second set 25-23 and gave the Pacers the lift they needed to easily win the next two sets.

Against Eastern Mennonite, Jacops had 11 kills followed by Anderson with 10 kills and Simpson with eight. Jacops and Grace also totaled four and three blocks, respectively, while Chinigo led the Pacers with five blocks.

Brylski finished with 36 assists, 13 digs and two aces. Savannah Hairr led the defense with 14 digs and Arens totaled 13 digs.

The Pacers play three matches in the final week of the regular season. They visit Methodist on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. before hosting Brevard on Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 12 p.m.
