Pacers Split Final Day Of Averett Cougar Classic

DANVILLE, VA -- William Peace University volleyball split the final day of the Averett University Cougar Classic with a 3-0 win over Shenandoah University and a 3-1 loss to Washington and Lee University. The Pacers now stand at a 3-2 overall record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE - SHENANDOAH UNIVERSITY


Set One (25-17)
The first set would be close early on, with a service ace from Emerson Scollo putting the pacers up 5-3. A four-point run with kills from Georgia Grace Anderson and Nancy Gamewell would extend the Pacer lead to 14-7. A kill by Alyssa Poteat and a service ace from Vivian Camplin would bring the score to 22-16, while two kills by Hannah Collier and a service ace from Hannah Ward would clinch the set 25-17.

Set Two (25-20)
The Hornets would take the early advantage in set two to lead 5-2 before kills from Shelby Cooper and Alyssa Poteat would tie it up 6-6. The set would go back and forth between both teams, with neither gaining a clear advantage until a 4-point run with kills by Shelby Cooper and a service ace by Logan Moore would put WPU up 24-19. Cooper would get the final kill to take the set 25-20 and give the Pacers a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set Three (25-23)
The final set would be the closest of all three, with the Hornets tying it early at 5-5. Kills from Shelby Cooper and Georgia Grace Anderson would put the Pacers up 9-5, but the Hornets would battle back to even it up 9-9. The Pacers would go on a six-point run to lead 15-9, but the Hornets would make an impressive push to tie the set 19-19. Georgia Grace Anderson would tally the last three kills for the Pacers to win 25-23 and take a 3-0 match victory.

GAME TWO - WASHINGTON & LEE

Set One (21-25)
The Generals would control the early game, leading 6-3 in the first set before the Pacers would take a 7-6 lead on a service ace from Shelby Cooper. The Generals would go on a 4-point run to lead 12-9. Despite a great effort from WPU, Washington and Lee would not give up too many chances, and would take the first set 25-21.

Set Two (15-25)
Early momentum in the second set would favor the Generals as they took a 5-1 lead. The Pacers would bring it within one on kills from Hannah Collier, Logan Moore, and Shelby Cooper as they trailed 12-11. A late 7-point run from the Generals would put them at a 24-14 advantage over the Pacers, and they were able to secure a 25-15 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set Three (25-21)
The Pacers would rally in the third set, going on an early 10-point run to lead 11-1, with Alyssa Poteat, Shelby Moore, Logan Cooper, and Hannah Ward making key plays. The Generals would push back, bringing the score back within three as the Pacers led 24-21, but WPU would take the final point to win 25-21 as they trailed 2-1 in the match.

Set Four (25-9)
The Generals would be dominant in the final set, despite a kill from Shelby Cooper tying it at 3-3 early. Washington & Lee would take a controlling 19-9 lead before grabbing the final six points to win 25-9 and secure a 3-1 win over the Pacers.

  • Abby Lichtenfels tallied 34 assists for the Hornets in game one.
  • Sydney Heifner led the Generals in game two with 17 kills.

NEXT GAME
The Pacers will return home to host a WPU Quad-Match on September 10th and 11th. Guilford College, Christopher Newport University, and Meredith College will all attend, with the Pacers starting against Guilford on September 10th at 6 PM.
