WPU Softball Sweeps Squirrels On Senior Day

The Basics:
  • Game 1: William Peace 6 Mary Baldwin 1
  • Game 2: William Peace 11 Mary Baldwin 2

Game 1:
  • The Fighting Squirrels would jump on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning as Lindsay Simmons opened with a double to right field. Simmons advanced to third on a passed ball and would score off a single to short stop by Sam Breeden. Mary Baldwin would lead 1-0.
  • Kelsey Durham held off the Squirrels in the top of the second inning with three straight K's.
  • With a quiet third and fourth inning, the Pacers came alive as Taylor Byrd hit a solo homerun over the left field fence to tie the game up 1-1. Emily Puckett followed Byrd with a walk. Candice Smith stepped up for a 2 RBI homerun over center field wall to give the Pacers a 3-1 lead.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning with bases loaded, Candice Smith stepped up to hit a rope to right center to score two. With the next at bat, with runners on the corners, Smith would be caught stealing, but not efore Taylor Byrd would score the Pacers' sixth run of the game.
  • Kelsey Durham would get the win on the mound, giving up just three hits and one run, throwing 11 strikeouts.

Pacer Top Performers for Game 1:
  • Candice Smith lead with two hits, four RBI's and one homerun.
  • Kelsey Durham finished with two hits, throwing an impressive 11 strikeouts on the mound.
  • Taylor Byrd finished with two hits and one homerun.

For the Foes for Game 1:
  • Lindsay Simmons finished with two hits and one double.
  • Sam Breeden finished with one hit and one RBI.

Game 2:
  • The Fighting Squirrels would once again start the first inning on top, as a single through the right side of the field scored one. Mary Baldwin would score again on a wild pitch before the top of the first inning would come to a close.
  • The Pacers answered in the bottom of the first inning as Kristin Bailly began a rally with a single through the left side. Lauren Conway laid down a sac bunt to advance Bailly to second. A single to left field by Kristina Mojica scored Bailly to put the Pacers on the board.
  • The Pacers tied the game up as Kaylea Eubanks singled to right field, scoring Mojica in the bottom of the first.
  • Skylar Conklin would continue the bats in the bottom of the second inning with a single to right center to lead off. Emily Puckett followed with a single up the middle, advancing Conklin to third. Candice Smith double to left field, scoring Conklin. A single from Lauren Conway down the left field line would score Smith and Puckett. With two on, Olivia Oates singled up the middle, scoring Conway. Kristina Mojica would score on a wild pitch, giving the Pacers a 7-2 edge heading into the top of the third inning.
  • With two on, in the bottom of the fourth inning, Elizabeth Kaspala came in to pinch hit, drilling a doule to left field, scoring two.
  • Leading 9-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Kristina Mojica hit a two-run homer over the left field fence to end the game in a mercy rule, 11-2.

Pacer Top Performers for Game 2:
  • Kristina Mojica went 4-4 at the plate with three RBI's and a homerun.
  • Candace Smith went 3-4 with one RBI and one double.
  • Kaylea Eubbanks had two hits and one RBI.
  • Liliana Berber earned her first win on the mound throwing three strikeouts.


For the Foes for Game 2:
  • Jordan Miller lead the Fighting Squirrels with two hits.
  • Sam Breeden finished with one hit.

What's Next?
The WPU softball team is back in action on Saturday, April 6 with a double header in Rocky Mount, NC. The Pacers will take on N.C. Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m.
