Volleyball Sweeps Conference Opponents at Averett Tri-Match

Danville, VA-- The William Peace University volleyball team hit the road on Friday afternoon to take on Pfeiffer and Averett University in a tri-match at Averett's homecoming weekend. As of late, the Pacers had been red hot coming off of an eight game win streak that was recently ended by Christopher Newport University. The Pacers picked back up where they'd left off in conference play, to earn two victories in Danville.

Game 1 : The Sweep

The first game for the Pacers at the Averett tri-match would prove to be a 3-0 sweep but the Falcons of Pfeiffer University did not go down without a fight. After three errors from the Pacers in the early moments of set one, the Falcons took a 6-3 lead. The Pacers would go on a 6-0 run to take the lead, 9-6. With a back and forth flow, the Pacers would edge out the Falcons in set one, 25-18.

Set two would move swiftly as the Pacers jumped out to an early 17-10 lead. The attack from William Peace would prove to much for the Falcons as the Pacers soared on to win set two, 25-14. Set three would work back and forth from both teams with WPU always maintaining a small lead. Late errors from the Pacers would ring the Falcons within reach down the stretch as the Pacers held a 24-22 lead. An attack error from the Falcons would send the Pacers to victory in their third and final set against Pfeiffer, 25-22.

The Foes
  • Alonna Clause had 12 kills, two aces, two assists, and 13 digs for the Falcons.
  • Angelina Fardella had 25 assists and 9 digs for the Falcons.

Game 2 : The Comeback

The match-up between the Cougars and Pacers proved to make the final match-up of the night interesting. It was a back and forth chess match, every set. William Peace University trailed for most of the first set, but would come back strong late in the set. McLendyn Weathersby and Sha'Nice Frazier helped shrink the lead to only three, with big kills. Brienna Laskowski had timely kills late in the set to tie the game at twenty four. This was the first time the Pacers would lead this set. The final score of the first set was (26-24) in favor of the Pacers.

Set two was much of the same with the back and forth scoring. Mclendyn Weathersby had back to back kills to give the Pacers an 8-7 lead. Abby Taylor was an offensive threat for the Cougars and would tie the game at 11. Averett University would not give up the lead from that point on and would take set two, 25-19. In the third set, the Cougars dominated. William Peace was unable to put much together on offense and would lose the set, 25-11.

Mya Parks, Brienna Laskowski, and Sha'Nice Frazier all contributed to a big fourth set. This was a make or break set for the Pacers with the game on the line and the offense and defense came up big. Timely late kills and defensive digs helped the Pacers take the lead after the game was tied at 11. The Pacers would make set four, a nail-biting finish before a kill from Parks and assisted block from Laskowski and Frazier would earn the Pacers a fifth set.The fourth would come to a close at 25-22 in favor of WPU.

Set five would be a battle for both teams. With the game tied at eight, the Pacers would go on a 5-0 run to bring their lead to 13-8. The Cougars would end the run with a kill but the Pacers would find their final points coming from a service error and a final kill from Frazier to take the come-from-behind win over Averett.

  • Mckenzie Miller tallied 14 kills and 28 assists.
  • Brooke Aaron had 13 kills.
  • Kennan Marks also shared the team lead in assists at 28.

What's Next?
Two big wins on the road now leads in to the ultimate rivalry game for the Pacers. William Peace will drive five minutes down the road to Meredith College on October 2 at 7:00 p.m. The number one and two seeded teams in the USA South will battle it out as inner-city rivals. Meredith College comes into the game with an overall record of 9-3 and a conference record of 4-0.
