Pacers Win Final Game of Piedmont Series With 9th Inning Rally

CARY, NC --- The William Peace University baseball team broke out of their five game losing streak while subsequently breaking the Piedmont Lions five game winning streak on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Lions 4-3 in their final game of the three-day series. The win brings the Pacers to (6-8) overall & (1-5) in conference play.

After accounting for more than twenty-five runs in the two previous games, the third and final game of the weekend series started off with both teams struggling offensively. Sean Finnernan was the the only batter in the first three innings able to register a hit. Piedmont's offensive struggles didn't stop them from getting on the board first. In the 4th inning a series of errors and errant throws by the Pacers allowed the Lions to steal home and take a 1-0 lead. The Pacers were able to get two hits in the bottom of the inning but left a man stranded after a Nick Holt groundout. Piedmont's bats woke up in the 5th inning as Justin Groover sent an RBI double to left field bringing home Cameron Johnson. The hit put the Lions up 2-0. After stealing 3rd on an error, a Johnson tag at home put the Lions up 3-0. The Pacers were able to get out of the inning while Piedmont left two runners stranded on base.

The Pacers showed life in the bottom of the 5th after a Sean Finneran single loaded the bases with Easton Payton up next to bat. After an extended at bat Payton ultimately lined out to the centerfielder to end the inning as the Lions looked to continue to increase their lead. The 6th inning saw the first pitching change of the game as the left handed senior Ben Brann took the mound in relief of Luke Westmoreland, who to that point had only allowed one hit. After a shaky start that saw Brann hit two batters the Pacers were able to get out of the top of the 6th without allowing any runs.

The bottom of the 6th started with a pitch that struck Alec Allred, sending him to 1st. Christian Dix looked to advance Allred but struck out looking for the first out of the inning. After six scoreless innings Nathan Holt belted a home run that would cut the Lion deficit to one. Two quick strikeouts and a flyout ended the inning for the Lions in the top of the 7th. With two hits under his belt already Sean Finnernan added another that brought Justin Torres home to tie the game at 3. An Allec Allred strikeout & Christian Dix flyout concluded the inning for the Pacers. Benn Brann's brilliant day continued as he struck out the Piedmont side in the top of the 9th to keep the game tied at 3.

With one out Michael Sterne stepped to the plate and belted a double to left centerfield putting himself in scoring position. The freshman from Fayetteville, Gavin Wheeler was put in to pinch run for Sterne. A groundout by Justin Torres sent Wheeler to third & set up a moment of redemption for Easton Payton. After already leaving runners stranded earlier in the game, Payton was determined to right the ship. In an at bat that saw Payton go down in the count early, he crushed a single that the Piedmont shortstop couldn't collect as Wheeler tagged home to win the game for the Pacers.
