Raleigh, NC-- The William Peace University women's basketball team defeated Mary Baldwin College (79-53 ) on Sunday, January 21. The Pacers now improve to an overall record of (3-11) and a conference record of (3-5).
Jayde Grant would put up the first points of the game, and the Pacers would continue to lead the entire first quarter. Grant tallied 8 points in the first quarter alone, while the Pacers shot an impressive 47.1% from the field and 100% from the line. The Pacers led 19-11 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, WPU continued to add to their lead, with Mikayla Ray opening the second quarter with a jumper. Mary Baldwin would go on a 9-point run to bring the Pacer lead down to (24-22) at the 6:45 mark. Mikayla Ray added two points from the line at 6:31 to give the Pacers a (26-22) lead, but after that neither team would put any points on the board until 3:04, when Deja Umstead added 2 from the line. The Pacers would head into halftime leading 37-28 with some last minute points from Shaniya Taylor.
In the third quarter, Jayde Grant would again open up the scoring for the Pacers. Mary Baldwin would get the game within 6 at the 7:57 minute mark (39-33), but WPU pushed back. DeJah Cheatham added 9 points from behind the arc, while Shaniya Taylor would add 6, also from the 3-point line, to send the Pacers into the 4th quarter leading (61-35). Deja Umstead started off the scoring for the Pacers in the 4th quarter with a 3-pointer, while WPU continued to dominate the game offensively, shooting 36.8 % from the field. WPU would take the win (79-53) over Mary Baldwin.

Jayde Grant and DeJah Cheatham contributed 19 and 14 points, respectively, with Cheatham shooting 4-7 from the 3-point line.

The Pacers will continue conference play against cross-town rival, Meredith College on Wednesday, January 24. The 7:30 p.m. matchup will take place in the Hermann Athletic Center; Meredith arrives to the game with an overall record of (3-14) and a conference record of (3-6) after falling to Averett University this afternoon.
