Box Score CARY, N.C. -- The WPU men's soccer team defeated Southern Virginia in a sweeping win, 3-0. The Pacers improve to 3-1 on the season, making this their best season start in school history.
The Pacers began the first half with a fiery start, with a goal from sophomore,
Junior Ayala who was assisted by
Chris Deleon within the five minute mark. Deleon followed closely behind, scoring at the 11 minute mark with an assist from the left side from Ayala. This goal set Deleon tied with WPU men's soccer alum,
Enrique Ochoa, as the all-time leading scorer for WPU men's soccer with 16 career goals. Offensively, the Pacers took over in the second half and outshot the Knights 14-4 in the second half alone. The final goal for the Pacer would be attained in the seventy-first minute as
Steven Wigley crossed the ball from the right side to
Seth Cranford for a goal within the 18. The Pacers would finish with a final score of 3-0.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Pacers limited the Knights to just four shots in the second half with several defensive stops from sophomore
Jonathan Miller and
Ryan Appleyard. In net for WPU,
Christian Ortiz secured five saves on the night.
Head Coach
Ryan Huber shared after the game, "Tonight was a real bounce back game from last night. Our guys showed a lot of character coming out strong after a tough loss last night. It was great to see our guys come out ready to play and score two goals early."
Looking ahead, the Pacers will hit the road to Harrisonburg, Virginia to take on Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, September 9, at 7:00 p.m. The Royals will be entering the contest with a record of (2-0), their most recent win coming from a victory over Wesley College.
